'86 Ranger/2.3/TFI/auto/Callifirnia smog. Ok maybe i'm missing something painfully obvious but, where is the SPOUT connector. My Chilton's and Clymer Ranger books state to disconnect it in order to set the engine timing. Supposed to be right off the distr. connector, i've got six wires three going into a foil wrap and three more all going into the harness w/no single wire connector. I ask not because of anything running bad but because of CA smog requirements, shop failed my truk cuz the timing is off. One shop told me that the truck burns so clean "you couldn't commit suicide with it ". But rules are rules and i need to set the timing. Why i am stuck going to a "test only" station is another story. Please send help
one of the wire harnesses near the distributor is a two-wire harness that ends in a plug that looks like a small square flasher or circuit breaker, just pull it out of the plug to set the timing. i had a '88 2.3 many years ago, and thats what i remember it being.
It might also be an inline connection that looks like a standard 2 wire harness connection. Still, it should be in the wiring harness from the TFI module, usually within a few inches of the distributor.
I searched high and low for the one on my '86 2.3. It was over on the other side, nowhere near the distributor. A mechanic pointed it out to me, tho I've never unplugged it to see if it's the right one. I have no idea what my timing is, it runs; that's good enough for me!
