My 86 Ford 4x4 truck had been making a tiny missing noise and several days later i was driving down the road when it lost all power and started sputtering really bad.Well when i found the distributor cap it was fried in the center so i replaced the plug wires cause they were old and replaced the cap .When i went to start it again it sounded like a steam engine and now is misfiring bad. Did it jump time or what? Any answers will be greatly appreciated!

Take off one wire at a time from the distributer (hold it as far back on the cap as you can or else you'll get electricuted) and see if you can tell which cylinders make a difference as far as how it runs. It will either make it run worse or no change when you pull each one off. You can find which ones are mixed up if thats what the problem is, and then switch them around too see if they make it run better. You could also wear a glove of some type if you want. I wouldn't recommend doing it my way if you have heart problems or anything like that.
