After reading some posts here about fan clutches , it seems the fan should spin freely when cold, and up to 1/2 to 1 turns when warm.
Mine is tight when cold but spins about 1/2 turn when warm.
Do I need to replace it.?
Engine seems to be running colder than usual according to the stock temperature gauge.
thanks
doesn't sound like u have a problem. How much the fan spins is very subjective. I don't think a tight fan could actualy make a engine run cooler, don't trust your temp. gauge
heres a link about fan clutches. Im changing it tonight and will post if any difference.
The clutch engaging noise i havnt heard for a few months come to think of it. Plus massive air blows always under the vehicle even on cold starts.
Thanks. It sounded like like a plane under the hood for the last 6 weeks months. I forgot about this thread. Repaced the fan clutch and the noise is gone!
Hmmmm, I guess my original one had nothing wrong with it, and I replaced it with a defective one.........Oh well thats one reason i'm switching to electric.
Since fan clutches are thermally activated, the theory behind them is that they hold tighter when the engine is warm thus increasing the volume of air pulled across the radiator when the engine most needs it. As was mentioned the amount of "spin" you can get by turning it by hand either with the engine warm or cold, is pretty subjective and depends upon how much force is used to do the spinning. The "better" way to observe the effectiveness of a fan clutch is to start the truck cold and observe or"feel" the amount of airflow at startup. Then go drive til the enigne is good and warm, stop, pop the hood and observe again. The airflow should, at the very least, be as good as it was at startup but prefferably better. In theory this would be a fairly accurate determination of the fan clutch condition.
Just as a footnote, The fan clutch spins easier the more you turn it also. Its hard to tell if its good at all. The one i took off and the new one I put on were really spinning the same. But since i cant really spin it by hand at 700rpms its almost impossible to tell mechanically if its bad i think.
Reading greystreak's post i now notice at idle in this winter weather the airflow under the engine is a lot less and i hardly feel it. Before it was like being in a hurricane even at -10F when you put your face around the engine
