I have a 70 f100 390 bored, mild cam, holly 500 two barrel, 307 or 304 gears in the rear end. my question is what would be a good stall converter for me. I pull a trailer a lot, but i also like to rip around town and show the guys with new trucks that the oldies can hold their own. thanks.
also i have heard that FE stands for Franklin Edsel. does anyone else know more about that?
I would reccomend that you keep the stock converter if you are going to tow alot. Stall converters generate more heat because they are designed to slip, and towing would only intensify the heat problem. Towing would also possibly damage the converter because it would slip even more until the converter fully engages.
KTS,
Joe has made a good point. A big stall does generate more heat.
BUT:
If your torque converter has a lockout, you can live with "this off the line heat generation." I am a firm believer in stall converters. They are great for developing bottom end range or, should i say, avoiding bad bottom end range.
A 2400 holeshot with lockout could work for you. Get some advice from a tranny specialist or a tow truck company. Towing will be your downfall, not racing. But, there is no better way to get out of the hole quickly than using a big stall converter.
