1959 edsel 332 Help

Hi
My 1959 Edsel 332 engine is having problems. When it is running die right out and if you hit the gas fast enouhf it will catch it self back. i a bottle of gas treatment/carb cleaner in the tank helped a bit but not much. the carb is a Holley 2 bbl and has a rebuild kit in it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Dave

Welcome to FTE!

Have you checked the accelerator pump? That's what it sounds like to me.

Does it stumble if you hit the gas quickly, or does pumping the gas keep it going?

HI
When i pump the gas while it's not running it shoots gas in the carb. if i hold the gas a bit it will stay running smooth then all of a sudden it will die but then i pump the gas 2 times fast an it will start running smooth againthe lower the rpms are the more it dose it.
So i dont have to constently pump the gas to keep it running but mabie tomorow i will put my other accelerater pump in that came with the kit. only reason i dident change it is becuse it lokked like it worked. it just started doing this. It was running fine before all this.
Thanks
Dave

Hrm. It sounds like something is plugged up in the main fuel metering system. The solution is to take the carburetor apart and rebuild it, making sure to squirt some compressed air through all the passages, both ways. You have a good clean new fuel filter on it, right?

Well a good start is pulling the float bowl. If you find any debris in the bottom that looks big enough to plug up the main jets, or anything else, remove it, stick the bowl on and try it again. If the problem doesn't go away, then do the complete rebuild.

Hard to tell. Most likely the answer is yes, but your mileage may go down and you might wash the cylinder walls and ruin your rings. How much bigger are they? What are you running now, and what are the new ones?

Hi is there an easy way to drain the float bowl without getting gas all over the intake?

They should be numbered if they're holley jets. And no, there is no way to get the gasoline out without getting it all over the intake. I suppose if you pulled the carb you could tip it upside down and it would go out the vent tube.

The best way to deal with the gas spillage from a Holley is to work with a cold engine and put some rags under the carb to catch the spill.

I wouldn't mess with the jets. They are not the problem.

The Holley metering block can go bad. Springs inside it can fail, also dirt can get inside and make problems. Since the metering block is a sealed unit, it needs to be replaced, or a remanned carb installed. The intermittent dying problem sure sounds like a metering block problem to me.

Is this happening at all times, or only when the engine is cold?
