I have a 99 ford explorer V6 (I think 4litre) with 100K miles. It is leaking at the oil filter. It has always leaked a little bit after an oil change for a day or 2 after then stopped...now it is leaking pretty bad. Just changed out the oil/filter last night and it is still leaking..oil filter was on good.. .any suggestions?
Make sure the mating surface for the filter gasket is clean and not buggered up. Make sure you coat the new filter gasket with a film of oil before installation and tighten 1/4 turn past snug.
I had a 67 Bonneville and when I changed the oil filter I did not notice that the old gasket was stuck on the engine. I screwed the new filter on it and filled 'er up with oil. When i started the car oil blew all over including the windshield.

Ah, great story vic. Shouldn't you be changing your tranny oil/filter?
I noticed a leak around my oil fliter on the 4.0 L that got worse over 5 or 6 years. I finally looked for it by cleaning everything off with Gunk, started it up and got underneath and saw oil seaping out from between the block and the oil filter adapter. You need to read this story. Besides being entertaining, there is a lot of detailed information that will help you out if you had anywhere near the experience I did.
And here's a link with a lot of other great repair info - including removing the exhaust manifold which you will need to do if you want to change the oil folter adapter.
