Quieter 7.3L?

<HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1> <!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->I have noticed a big difference in interior engine (injector?) noise between my 2000 7.3L Powerstroke and a friends 2003 7.3L Powerstroke. My truck is not getting louder, it sounded the same since new. At a glance the trucks are pretty much identical. What did Ford do differently on the 2003 to make it so much quieter? Can it be retrofitted?

Are both in factory stock condition? Other than PCM programing, I would think both engines are pretty much the same. Ford did change one injector to help reduce injector noise, but I'm not sure what year that was started. You might want to check with your friend and find out what fuel, brand and weight oil he uses. Does he use a fuel additive? Sometimes the little things make a noticable difference.

Are they the same trim levels? IE XLT, lariat? different trim levels have different underhood sound dampening material. Also, i was going to ask what hiboy asked, are you sure its a 7.3L?

I have noticed a LOT of difference in interior engine noise with 7.3 PSDs. When I was looking to buy one, I was amazed at how different some were.

Now, I own one, my brother owns 4 (or is it 5 - I forget). The quietest of the bunch (on the interior) is his 97 F350 XL 4x4 crew cab. It is quieter inside than his '01 Excursion XLT. It is nearly as quiet inside as a friend's '04 6.0 - of course, on the OUTSIDE it is much louder than the 6.0.

The noisiest is his '99 F250 4x2 Supercab XL - it clatters so loud inside you can't hear the radio unless it is all the way up. When I bought mine, it was about halfway between the two. After doing the fuel tank mod and the HPX, it was noticeably quieter. Running Stanidyne fuel additive religiously in every tank has made it quieter yet so that it is only a little louder than my brother's '97.

How's the torque converter in your 2000???
Just did the trans and TC in my 99 and I found out why my truck was so much louder than others.
World of difference........

The two trucks being compared are SRW crew cab 7.3L SWB 4x4 running
Rotella oil. Differences are that mine (the louder one) is a 2000 Lariat with leather interior and Superchip software. His is a 2003 XLT with cloth and Edge software.

Interior noise does not seem to change all that much when I flip flop software.

Regarding the converter question: My truck is a very late 2000. Tranny and converter are original. I once got it hot (OD light flashing) at about 40k when towing at 80 MPH in rolling hills. Changed the filter, fluids and added an additional tranny cooler. Never a problem since. Truck now has 112k. I regularly tow a 28' enclosed tag. Total truck and trailer = 18k pounds.
