Hopefully one of you computer geniuses reads this. I noticed that the cursor on my mouse started jumping around. It was an optical mouse so I figured the sensor was going bad or something so I bought another one from Logitech, same brand as I had before, and this one's worse. Is there any kind of troubleshooting I can do because I threw away the box thinking with a new mouse my problem was solved so I'm kind of screwed here. Should i go with a different brand? Is there something I can do to the mouse to make it right again? Any kind of information is most appreciated. Thanks for listening.
go into the control panel and find the mouse and see what the settings are on, you may need to change them, play with the settings and see if things change, I know about fords, but not much about computors
does it plug into the little green port for mice, or does it plug in via-USB port? If it's a USB mouse, you might try updating your drivers. just google "drivers for --insert model number here--"
Mine used to do that, on a wood grained table. The fix was to tape a nice clean sheet of paper under it, changed every now and then when it gets dirty.

Amazing how much dirt is on your hands that rubs off while just using the mouse. Even when you think your hands are clean. But this is what I do since I have an optical and it likes to jump.
Besides the obvious mechanical/electrical problems with optical mice, try this:
Get a regular wired mouse and try it - if it still does it, there's another reason:
Spyware/adware sucking up too much CPU time and not leaving enough for the mouse to move smoothly. Or something else running in the background sucking up CPU time.
IF you're in Windows XP or 2000/2003, hit Ctrl-Alt-Esc (hold down ctrl and alt, then hit ESC), you'll get a window called Windows Task Manager - Click on the Performance tab, and see how much % CPU you're running. If it's anything more than say, 2-5% something is running in the background. Go to the Processes tab, and see which process is taking CPU and report back here what the process name is.
