Was at a dealership and overheard part of a conversation between a salesman and a customer about the difference in the two trucks (fx4 and lariat). One of the things the salesman said was that besides the difference in options the lariat rode nicer because it uses different shocks/springs or something.
Is this true or do they both ride the same?
Yes, it's true, because the FX4 has a suspension (shocks, springs) setup for off-road use. The ride will be a little stiffer. I have the FX4 because it represented almost everything I wanted in a truck. The only difference is that I would rather forego the off-road suspension that I'm not going to use. For the moderate off-roading I would do, I'm certain the standard suspension would be fine. I mean who's really going to be rock-stomping in a SuperCrew, anyway?
Do you think that the stiffer shocks in the FX4 help on-pavement handling?
I'd have to drive a "regular" F-150 to compare. I think the handling of this truck is great--way better than what I would expect from a truck. It's also quiet over the bumps. But maybe the "regular" is just as good...or better.
I test drove both a Lariat and an FX4 back to back and the their is quite a difference in the ride the Lariat was a good bit smoother, but also felt a little sloppy around corners, whereas the FX4 seemed tighter and stiffer, more sporty I guess.
My FX4's ride smooths out a lot everytime I haul a half-yard, 1200lb load of baserock
in the box :-) It does get a bit bouncy in the back set when empty though.

Are you comparing the 4X4 Lariat with the FX4? I have an '05 Lariat 4X4 and my buddy has an '04 FX4. Both have been raised 2" in the front and they seem very close to me.

Not only does it smooth out with a load back there, but the brakes work just as well. Another great feature...
If you have the FX4 and want a Lariet type ride chang the shocks all 4 corners to Rancho RS 9000 and dial them in to arouund three and you will have just as good a ride as the Lariet and also will have the option of increasing them for off road due to the 9 position adjustability. You could opt for three in teh rear to counter act teh bounce and a little stiffer upfornt. For those looking to raise the front a little, if you already have the day stqar or other similar space lift then the stock replacements will work if you are looking to raise the front Rancho has a shock (RS9000) that has that feqature built in already so you only have to do one mod.
Both were 4x4 only diff was the fx4 was supercab and lariat was a screw. I certainly wouldnt say the ride is bad in either of them my FX4 is MUCH nicer than any other 4x4 ive ridden in especially the new dodge.
I have the FX4 and drove both the FX4 and XLT. The ride in the FX4 is definitely a little stiffer but still rides great, does not ride rough at all. Best riding trucks in the world.
