Hello all, been gone for awhile but I'm back again. Has anyone figured a cure for the vibrating power steering hoses. Mine make an aweful noise when turning at slow speeds. I'm running the stock size 215/70/14 but on 7" rims.
My van does the same thing, or at least I think this is what you are talking about. At very low speeds, while Im turning the wheels, the whole front of the van "shudders" or vibrates. Not sure whats causing it?
Its possible you both have air trapped within the steering rack. This causes both a noisy pump as well as the shudder sensation you describe. To purge the air, you raise the front end, start the van and slowly rotate the steering to full lock on one side and then the other. Don't hold it at full lock, just turn the wheel until you feel it stop then immediately start back to the other side. Do this several times and it should purge any trapped air.
There may also be a blockage somewhere in the system either from inadvertently introduced debris or one of the hoses may be internally deteriorating and throwing chunks and blockages.
A failing pump may also be the culprit if it is not be putting out sufficient pressure at low speeds. If the purge does not change things, consider the pump.
I have a 96, 4.0, ext. 114K miles. Don't know if it is the same thing. but I had a similar problem years back. When I would turn a corner, I would get a slapping sound low on the front end. I figured it was power steering hoses, or something connected with power steering. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it for free. I believe there was a TSB out on it. It involved changing out power steering hoses...... OK I got the ticket ...says there is a TSB 96-7-19 . I had 44,309 miles on the van when the work was done in 2/99. There are a bunch of part numbers here but it looks like all they did was change out hoses and bolts, etc. Whatever they did solved the problem. No more slapping sound at all.
