Two heaters were available. One was a recirculating heater that simply heated the air in the cab. The other was a fresh air heater that had ductwork to that outside vent that could be opened to pull fresh air in from outside.
My side cowl vent had a cover over it I assumed the PO put on it when they put in the AC unit. I'm considering adding a duct to an outlet on the kick panel for when I want fresh air and it is raining too hard to open the cowl vent. I vaguely remember a car my family had, I think it was the 54 Ford SW, that had a door on the heater that you could open for fresh air.
Thanks for all that great info!.. now I need to look at my future heat & A/C chocies to see if they use this vent or not.. at least BEFORE I weld it shut!..
so do i the one mine came with was plumbed straight to the engine with no way to regulate the temp or to turn the defrost off so it was either off or cremate lol kinda reminde me of the helos i was flying in at the time it had a 500,00 btu heater in it the pilots would get toasty in the cockpit and i would have to open up the windows in the back when it was on or burn up !!!
