I noticed on the passenger side front cab corner, it's starting to rot. Bodyshop overlooked it and there is also a pinhole of rust coming through in another spot. Now that I will have my own heated shop this winter I'm thinking of tackling the bodywork (re do it all). I'd like to just get new cab corners. I've been seeing two different kinds, 22" and 32 cowl", benefit to one or just depends on severity of damge?
Don't know what you can do in your nice heated shop. But when I did the body work for my truck I cut out the cancer (rust) and replaced with new steel. If you've got the facilities it'd be cheaper than a kit I'm sure.
I just recently replaced both front cab corners on my '54 with 32" replacements from Mid-Fifty. They are only $85 each and I was pleased with the fit. They also have the "triangle" cut out on the bottom leading edge for accessibility. I am told that Ford put this type on the Effies starting in mid year 1955 and all 1956(I could be mistaken) The only drawback on the passenger side part there are 2 extra holes in the upper center of the part that shows after the fender is installed. Mid-Fifty explains this in their catalog as a screw up by the supplier using a cowl corner that had the post side mount style radio antenna thus making 2 extra holes in your new part. Hope this helps somewhat!
I just replaced the right side corner and still have the left side to go. I only needed the 12-13" panel when I orfdered them from Bob's but htey only had the full panel in stock so they sent that for the same price, I just cut off what I needed. They are a pretty good fit not perfect but close enough. Replaced the rocker panels at the same time, you probably will find them rusted as well when you get into them.
I am replacing the cab corners on my 55 now.. left side done, right side to go (after I finish the floor)..
I ordered the short versions a couple years ago, then got sidtracked with kids cars, etc.. the door edge stamping was lousy. SO I ordered two new ones from MidFifty, and they are taller (cover the gas filler hole) and have a very good (not perfect) door edge fit. (and are coated to eliminated rust while stored).
I am also doing the door post bottoms using Mid Fifty parts, again very close, but about 1/8-3/16 too wide.
I just had the cab sandblasted and notice a pinhole in the outer left front corner skin that I have to look at now.
Hi Sam. Had a chance to drop in to Mid Fifty in Golden Valley, AZ this past March. Found them to be great to talk to and very helpful. A nice place with tons of parts in stock, could hardly pull myself away!
I did both my corners last summer. My thinking then was to make the weld that shows as short as possible. In the case of these trucks, that means making the joint as low down on the cowl as possible. My rot was such that I had to sculpt the repair patch into an odd shape, because I had serious rust behind the fender, but not so bad on the exterior exposed surface. I got my patches from Mid-Fifties. I had a couple of hours of hammering and tweaking of the patch to make it line up with the profile of the stock metal....the 90 degree bends in the patch that forms the door opening were not as tightly bent as the original metal. Otherwise, it wasn't too bad an experience. I bought the shorter patch panels.
if you check my gallery you will see that i replaced both front cowl corners i bought mine from mid fifty also the only two things i didnt like was the radio antenna holes in both passenger and driver cowl panels and the pass side didnt have the stock fresh air vent in it i just drilled out the spot welds and welded them in dont forget to get the fender stiffener bracket for the holes it is a pain to put in after you weld the piece in dont ask how i know !!!
the pass side didnt have the stock fresh air vent in it i
speaking of the air vent.. maybe my cab has a different trim level, but the cap on the inside of that vent doesn't have an opening in it, so it is really just a big cover.
where does the air 'vent' to on yours? I have considered patching this closed as it has (looks like) no functional use..
so was mine it has to do with the heater getting outside air i guess mine did not have a stock heater in it when i got it so maybe earl has a clue in his majic stocker bag of tricks !!!
