Down Pipe or not to Down Pipe

Just trying to get some opinions on whether or not adding changing the DP on a 2004 6.0 L will make the difference on an exhaust upgrade. I have the Cat Back in and have the new DP sitting here in my garage. My only concern is I have heard stories of Warranty's getting turned down because of the DP. Is there enough difference to take that chance or should I leave well enough alone.

Since installing part of my Bully Dog system, Cat Back, I've been apprehensive to install the down tube too. But since there hasn't been much EGT cooling affect, I'll be doing it soon. Remember, There's no warranty issue from the change. Legally. The only warranty claim they can deny is with something that is exhause related. Ford sells a complete Borla system on it's website. It says for offroad use, but nothing about voiding warranty.

I took it sorta like you have. Cat back to make sure the engine likes the new jewelry. It does so far. I can tell the difference too. Both in exhaust note and power at the seat of my pants. Cat back, no muffler with an 18" 5" tip. The tip is what makes my install sound unique.

Since my goal is lower EGT's when towing, my next step will be to install the down tube this weekend and have two weeks before my next tow across the mountains. That ought to be plenty of time to analyze the changes. From what I've read, the larger down tube is the key to lower EGT's. Not so much more power with the tube, but suposedly noticable. The biggest reward was getting rid of the boat anchor muffler they put on these things. I will have to cut the stock down tube just before the cat flange. So be it. But I'll do it neat and clean just in case the stock stuff needs to get put back on.

BSEXTON,

To date I haven't had any customers call with denied warranty issues with a down pipe so long as the cat is in place and is unmodified. It's just like Mustangs, for years they have installed headers and cat back exhaust with no problems from Ford.

Thanks for some of the input. I think I will drive for a few weeks and decide if I am happy enough with it. I guess I still have a question as to whether or not there will be much noticible change by putting the down pipe in.

I have the turbo back 3.5"-4" muffler delete and wasn't denied warranty work (head replaced) and the dealership was fully aware. Had to get factory approval for the work, which included pictures of the daisy's on my pistons, and had no squabble at all. I can definitely tell the difference with the a/m exhaust on my truck.
