I own a 95 F150 XLT 4x4 and am interested in upgrading the existing am/fm cassette to a CD player. Anyway the question I have is do I need a kit for the CD player to fit in the factory dash opening? I have seen kits for other year models but not mine. I know you have to have a special tool to remove the stock unit and I have seen these but not any dash kits or wiring harness adaptors. Any help is appreciated.
I got a DIN aftermarket Alpine from Crutchfield and they provided everything required to make up to the factory mount and harnesses (cheaper than local stores and they have tech support if you need it). Any place like circuit city or Best buy can provide the same - suggest going to the stores to see first hand what you like and also check online for best deals which vary with time . Good luck.
I would reccommend picking up the wiring harness. Makes the job a little cleaner looking. I don't think you'll need the dash mounting kit, I've never had any problems with mine just sitting in there. To remove the old radio, you'll need to cut and bend a wire coat hanger into to U shaped pieces. You need to push in the 4 tabs at once to pull the old radio out.
I've seen the wiring harness at Walmart. Try there or an electronics store, possibly a Pep Boys or Autozone as well.
Thanks for the replies. About the only place I've looked sofar is the local Walmart and Target and I didn't see a kit or adaptor for my year model. I'll check online at crutchfield and other sources.
you could also visit a salvage yard and pick up a factory cd player for about $50 that will plug right in.
Personally though, knowing how easy these trucks are to get into,I'd just add a cd changer that would play thru my existing radio and mount it under a seat or center console.
Nothing to see is less chance of getting it stolen.
I bought a Pioneer 2 years ago at Best Buy. That store has a good stock of adaptors, mounting hardware, and harnesses. My new radio looks like it belongs in the dash, pops in and out easily, and is color-matched to the cab interior, my cab is blue and the radio has blue lights and display.
The kids that work there seem to know their job.
I thought about putting in a stock Ford CD player (saw one on e-bay) but thought it was probably the same tuner as my am/fm cassette (reception sucks). There's a Best Buy just down the road so I think I'll see if they have something in my price range. Anyway thanks for all the info.
You might want to check you're antenna. I get good reception, sometimes too good, and the 94 factory radio was made by Alpine, or so I was told by an Alpine tech.
What is exactly wrong with your reception?? 99 percent of the time, reception problems are because of bad grounds, antenna/cable, or electrical interference from the ignition or alternator circuits.
BTW, You can buy a brand new antenna mast, antenna mount, and coax cable from the Ford dealer for less than 50 dollars, I just did, and the reception is much better now, my old antenna never worked right, I always thought my poor reception was normal for my truck, I should have replaced the antenna system years ago.
Most of the channels I pick up are crystal but some channels I used to listen to in my 93 Cherokee I can't get now. The radio just has the seek so it just goes right by certain channels without stopping. Maybe I'll go ahead and replace the antenna as there really is no background noise in the channels I'm picking up.
