cummins vs ford
Diesels do have there negatives. I will say that I have gotten in the neighborhood of $20k for a diesel with 150k miles on it and it was a dodge to boot. Dodges are not known for their high mileage resell value. Try that with a v10. So even though the initial cost is higher I am able to recoup it at the end. So then it comes down to price of fuel and economy. We are at war so diesel is going to cost more.
There are only three reasons why I like diesels. They hold their value much better than a gas truck. They are more fuel efficient. My last two diesels got 19-24 mpg on the highway. They are dependable. Not such an issue with fords new gas engines but something that could not be said at the time. I need a truck that starts every time. My diesels always have.
Diesel fuel mileage is'int what it used to be - and this is true for all three available pickup diesels manufactured today. We're at best averaging 3-4 mpg better in every given circumstance than the larger more powerful gas motors get in equal circumstances. Diesel simplicity has gone out the window also. We actually have
many MORE moving and wearing parts than the gasoline powered trucks have.
When you consider how hard it used to be just to "justify" the diesel back in the days when fuel was cheaper than regular unleaded, when diesel engines had much better mileage over a gas powered truck, when they had simpler emmissions system designs, and coupled with the fact that a 2 valve V10 F350 had the highest available tow rating, HOW could we ever hope to justify now at this time with a higher fuel cost, less mileage advantage, more complication, and a much more powerful gasoline alternative?
No justification needed - and there's the problem of imagined advantages.
Ford, of course, being gas OR oil burner........so what exactly is the track to get back on?

Hey BigF, notice how D*I*E*S*E*L gets dropped in a lot of posts? WTH???
The cummin vs ford thing has as lon gof history as the two have been produced, now matter how you look at it your not just buying the engine, so You really have to compare both in al aspects before declaring a fair winner of which is better.
05' dodge pluses:
CTD - need I say more
Offering a little more ot of the box thinking - this can also work against you though
Decent styling
lowest price new truck, no matter how you do the math the dodge is always the cheapest to buy
Negitives:
trany - they may have this fixed finnaly but we'll have to wait and see
no true crew cab - well not untill the mega cab come around
high tow ratings
turns like a tank - they all do but some are better that others
no engine between the 5.7L hemi and the cummins - that leaves a big gap
not as many optional features - although this helps keep the cost down, maybe it's plus
05' Ford Pluses:
most refined truck with the working hand in mind.
the best styling IMO
a variety of packages, motors and configurations
my personal favorite about mine are the twoing mirrors - the dodges aren't bad but fords got it figured out
a little plusher ride but with a suspension thats still capable of work
3V V10 - need I say more, now one has a gasser that can compete right now
Torqueshift trans seems to bee doing well
My second favorite option is the integrated trailor brakes - about time, maybe the others will follow
Negitives:
price - definitly higher for the same truck
6.0L Powerstroke - it may be the fastest and they are quite amazing but I'm not yet sold on the durability, maintainability, or reliability
I personally have some gripes about deleted Items on the 05's but that another topic
ESOF - I think everybody here knows there could be improvement here
avalibility - If you want a V10 they can be tough to find, the deisels and 5.4s are quite abumdant though.
These are a few for each that I could think of off the top of my head - I have more for the ford as I am more familier with the ford thatn the dodge - the dodge guys will have to show there hand for a good comparison.
trany - they may have this fixed finnaly but we'll have to wait and see
no true crew cab - well not untill the mega cab come around
high tow ratings
turns like a tank - they all do but some are better that others
no engine between the 5.7L hemi and the cummins - that leaves a big gap
not as many optional features - although this helps keep the cost down, maybe it's plus
Everybody can argue about the 'higher' initial cost of the diesel, but unless we are all buying the trucks 100% outright, then it doesnt really make a HUGE difference month by month. Not too mention, much higher resale value.
There is really NO need to argue about this, or 'debate' as some call it.
*PREFERENCE*PREFERENCE*PREFERENCE!!!!!
Seriously, I like you V10 guys, but whining about how "...diesel boys look down on us", and then turning around and trying to find ways to justify YOUR purchase, while preaching and bashing at the same time, makes this routine a little old.
Can't we all just congratulate each other for our purchase of a FORD truck?
[/Rant]
...ok, I feel better now.
Ford, of course, being gas OR oil burner........so what exactly is the track to get back on?

However a lot of the recent posts have been about the V10 powered Ford vs. 6.0l Ford, or diesel trucks in general - not what the original poster intended, and not really relevant in Ford vs The Competition.
BigF350
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
, it would somehow get turned into a diesel vs. gas debate.
