Hello, thank you for your reply. The wastegate lever is all the way to the driver's side. so it should be closed. Could it happen that the lever is all the way to the passenger side and it is still partially opened? Or mechanically that is impossible?
What should the fuel pressure be?
Thanks again,
Al
Yes your wastegate could open prematurely. You need to make sure the wastegate actuator rod is preloaded to 7 turns. If there is no preload you will lose boost. And again make sure your EBPV has the arm connected so it will open. If it stays close, it will be like blowing thru a pinched straw.
Hello, thank you for your message.
I have disconnected the wastegate actuator hose and plugged it, so that should be out of the question, unless the arm is all the way closed but the valve is not, could that happen? The EBPV seems to be open, at least when I turn on the homemade EBPV brake, it turns to close, so it seems to be open most of the time. Going at 70 mph I get between 0 and 2 psi. I checked the pressure, it seemed a little low, so I added a shim to the regulator, it came up a little. I also found tha tthis change made the valve to let the water out leak, so I put new o-rings since ford wantd too much for the whole kit. It got a little better, but not much. since the truck barely smokes, even at high loads, I think I might still have low pressure, I'm going to put a slightly bigger shim. Hopefully that will work. it is weird because i didn't touch any of these things when i rebuild the engine, and seems like they've changed a lot...
I have to pull a 5000 lbs trailer to Virginia (20 hour drive) on Monday, so I hope I can figure out the problem before then...
any other suggestions will be welcome.
I'd think you'd be seeing a lot of black smoke if you where able to dump fuel without boost. No boost no air to mix with fuel resulting in lots of black smoke. I believe you state earlier you had very little smoke. Did you replace the injectors during rebuild? Have you had them all checked? I am leaning more towards the ECM compatibility portion. Also, you might check the fuel pump on the Frame rail(if its a super duty) under the drivers seat about. One other quick thing to check out that I don't know if your programmer will read is check the Throttle position sensor, pedal, make sure that it is changing i.e. from Idle to WOT. Possible that it is not telling the engine to dump more fuel, but I'd then think you'd be getting awesome fuel milage as you'd not be able to hot rod it.
Hello, thank you for your reply.
I added a little shim to the pump., the pressure at idle is around 60 now.
It takes a few seconds to get there. Like all the time the glow plugs are on.
Under very heavy acceleration, the truck smokes just a little.
I am still driving it easy because I am breaking it in. As for injectors, the dealer ran several tests, including the cylinder contribution test a few times, it always tested good. It could be that all 8 injectors are worn out, but they seemed to be in decent shape, at least visually. I left them in diesel for days, and then cleaned them with compressed air. How do I check the fuel pump?
Thanks again.
Hello, well, I connected a pressure gauge, as soon as the pump starts, it pumps up to about 53psi. once the truck starts, it gets up to around 58. it sometimes got to 60. Once, under acceleration it got down to 48, otherwise it never came below 50. But, I didn't try it pulling or over 40 mph. Are these readings normal? if they are low, should I check the pressure regulator first? and then the pump? .
Here is your power loss problem. If you are losing fuel pressure before you even get over 40 mph with no load there won't be enough fuel injected to make combustion heat, resulting exhaust pressure, producing good boost. Fuel pressure (and supply) must be there for it to work good.
i'm assuming the truck sat for several months w/ no motor in it and an open exhaust. do you still have your cat? maybe a rat made a nest in your cat/or air cleaner or some other creature. check air cleaner, ebpv, maybe you have a weak fuel pump(nbs trucks are electric correct?) bad diesel fuel? thats what i would check.
i believe shimming fpr on nbs you need to buy a kit correct? fpr screen clean?
Hello, thanks for your fast replies. Nope, I don't have a cat, I have a 4" exhaust. I had pugged the air cleaner, so that one is good too. I could have a bad pump, I am not sure on how to check that. I didn't buy a kit, I just made shim with a small bolt. The fpr sreen is clean. Even when pussing really hard, I can get the egt to like 1000, but never get over 10 psi of boost. I checked my gauge and it works fine.
I could have a bad pump, I am not sure on how to check that.
You already have.
