Lightning Struck tree... AWESOME

well, the other day a storm rolled through San Antonio. it was a fast and hard storm, with an AWESOME outcome at my house. i live outside of town on 5 acres with lots of mesquite trees. my Grandparents happened to be over right before the storm hit, so we were all sittin in the den talking with the storm howling, then all of a sudden *Flash* BOOM! thunder right there. so i'm like "ok, thats cool, sounded like it hit really close" i get up and look out the back window at the rain, then i notice the tree that was on the ground "hey ya'll, that lighting struck a tree in the back" the tree is about 100 yards from the house and HAD been about 30? foot tal or so. the base of it was a little more than 12 inches across. you can see the awesome power from the pictures. whats REALLY wierd, is it was by no means the tallest tree around. not 30 yards rom it is a MUCH taller tree. 2 of them infact. prolly 50 foot. so who knows....it was jsut SOOOO cool, and i finally got the pics off my camera. enjoy Granda had never been that close to a tree that had been stuck (mind you, he's 84), he was REALLY impressed. he took a chunk of it home. a lot of the chunks of wood it blew apart are buned. way cool

yes it is pretty amazing the power of lightning, thats a pretty common occurence around here, i live on 300+ acres in the foothills of the ozarks, and every time it storms it hits the house of the surrounding trees.
about a month ago a storm had just past and i was picking up branches off the ground and light struck about 20-30 feet infront of me, after the storm had passed, i jumped out of my skin, it suprised me because it was totally calm

I've seen oaks and redwoods after a strike, blown apart. What happens is that both types of trees can store water in pockets, sometimes several hundred gallons. The lightning superheats the water and causes a massive steam burst...some say the oxygen in the water acutally ignites, but I wonder about that.

Still brutally fascinating, though.

I too have seen trees blown apart by a lightning strike. I saw a tree in my brother-in-laws yard in Memphis TN that was struck by lightning and it didn't scar it or damage the exterior in any way. It did kill it however.

Those are spaceships. Surprised you didn't know that.

I was once walking just last sumer through Philly, when a bolt hit a telephone pole just about 500' away. It was still enough to scare me good, and it definitely raised all of the hairs on my arms and legs. It was wild.
