What happened?Anybody remember back in the 70`s and early 80`s,the latest and greatest thing was going to be houses built underground. They were going to utilize the warmth from the ground, were going to be safer during tornados and severe weather, and were supposed to be more economical in the long run.I have seen a few of these type of houses but they never really seem to have caught on.I was wondering if anybody knew why?
There are some of those type houses here, but they have at least one wall exposed and are usually built into the side of a hill. I think most people like to have fresh air ventillation and a nice view, so that's one reason they probably haven't caught on.
they leaked water so easly, if u had a basment what ever it always got water in it some how, then u have animals getting in some how, then when its cold outside for a long time the ground gets cold
and if u fart to much ie after eating beans, it takes along time for that stuff to get out
so any pollutants from a stove that could kill u would take forever to get out even with exhaust fans
i have frends with them here
and my freind said they built the house and poured dir on top of it
the cool thing about them is u could build an escape tunnel when ur grounede

that would be pretty kool as you could use skylights for the outside lighting look inside and the vent fans to keep it all fresh....here in Fl it would suck as the water table is like 5' down when it starts to leak water from the soil....still think it would be pretty kool though
I don't understand why basements aren't more popular here in Nevada. A cool basement would be great when it's 100 degrees outside and with a water table about a million feet down there's not much problem with seepage. But for some reason, almost no houses around here have them????

I once saw a news report about folks buying up and living in old defunct missile silos in the mid-west. These were pretty sharp. The only trouble I saw was that they could not have any windows! They were built with huge garage style doors for storing large trucks and vehicles.

I have a ranch style home. I've always wanted one of these so I could escape when the wife goes on the war path.
Basements built correctly cost much more then slabs and require a month+ of curing before building on it. Hence, slabs in many parts of the country where deep freezes are nothing to worry about.
Yea, those missile silos I've seen converted are pretty cool. Very roomy. I think it was the Discovery Channel.
I think the price tag is a little steep....and theres the nuclear missle to work around.
I think soil conditions around the country dictate how popular basements are. In areas where soil is more unstable, digging is difficult and basements are not economical. I would say it is more expensive to build an underground home than a raised "stick framed" unit. In addition, people get caught up in the "aesthetics" of their investment. Most people don't want to spend $300,000-$500,000 on a home that they cant show off to their neighbors!
