c6-to toploader swap

i have a 1979 f150 460 c6 i want to install a toploader 4 speed.
i have a 1979 f250 400 np465 to use as a parts truck.
i have heard that some 6 cyl trucks used an overdrive variant of the top loader will the mounts and driveshaft from one of these trucks work?

They seem be the same. Go here and look all around the site regarding toploaders. Gearing is not great for a truck, and you do want the wide ratio.

I'd spend more and get a later model 5 speed:

or keep the C6 and:

Happy motoring.

thanx for the tip's i want the toploader because its the classic big block and a four speed combo if its a little sluggish than i will just add an extra couple of hundred horsepower :-) to compensate

One problem The OD trannies found in the trucks won't handle the power of a big block if your gonna use it hard.

But the 3spd with OD's can be found behind 302's too. up until 86. My 86 F150 has one. Even though I only have a 302 in mine it's a fun ratio tranny. If it would hold to the big block power it'll be a blast!

The 4 speed OD trans based on the top loader is not as strong as a top loader. The top loader link I listed shows some of the differences.

ZF's will take quite a bit of torque, but I doubt you could shift one very fast.

You enjoy yours because your 302 will rev far enough to overcome the grand canyon between 2nd and 3rd. Us 6 cylinder boys hate that gap, as the six won't wind up far enough to cover the gap.

Of course, you could put in the top loader AND a Gear Vendors OD...that would be quite a set up.
