I have a 2000 Ford F350 4x4 with the v-10 Gas engine with about 80k. It suddenly started to run rough. It especially is noticable at the bottom end of 4th gear or under load It acts as if it is bogging down (shakes a bit, etc). Seems ok at higher RPMs or down hill. 4x4'd into a lake (bouncy ride) prior to this happening. Didn't notice any unpluged hoses etc. under it. Everything else seems fine. Really stumped by this one. Any ideas out there?
Based on the copious amounts of time I've spent here reading all these guys' posts (both V10 and 4.6/5.4), I'd say there's a COP failing. Get the computer scanned - Autozone does it for free.
If the check engine light hasn't been flashing when this happens, they (and other simple-minded folk) might not know enough to go into the parameters and check for misfires.
The key is, if the computer detects a misfire enough times in a row, it will log a code. If the check engine light hasn't flashed, it probably hasn't gotten that far.
However, there is a datum that can be read, # of cumulative misfires, and individual cylinder misfires. If they go far enough to check the # of misfires, you should find exactly which COP is failing.
The check engine light will not go on. At least, in my case it didn't. I have replaced two of the COPs to date. First time got all concerned with the symptoms you mentioned happened. Second time knew that it was not a big deal; just need to pull the codes to determine which plug was not firing correctly.
