351M bogging down?

My '79 351M is all of a sudden bogging down and eventually stalling. It will run fine and then all of a sudden acts like someone stuffed a few banannas in my exaust. I was on the thruway today going 55 and all of a sudden it starts bogging down, almost like it cannot get gas. I managed to keep barely it going 35-40 mph, but could not give it anymore or less gas or it would stall. As soon as I got to the next exit ramp, it ran fine for a few miles, then it started all over. It has been doing this for a few days, but not consistantly. I replaced the distributor cap(an extra) and a fuel filter and it seemed to work for one day. It seems to be only do it at the worst times. Could be very dangerous when it dies out w/out steering! Any ideas? Valve maybe?

sounds like the ignition box on the inner fender, they usually do that, or sometimes they will kill it all together, I have had a few of them go bad.

351M bogging down?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Sep-02 AT 06:40 PM (EST)]I narrowed it down to the carb. I am getting gas all the way up to the carb, but it does not spray much, only after it sits a little and will only run for a minute or less. Does it sound like the accelerator pump? If I keep feeding it gas with a spray bottle it runs okay.

Replace the cheap little fuel filter in the carb .... you are probably sucking debris into the screen and after you are stalled the debris falls away.

As a rule on my old 78 351M (since I do not know the complete history of care or neglect!) I change the fuel filter at every oil change. I just refuse to change my fuel tank so the fuel filter gets the change.

No more starvation!
