I am new to this site and need some help. I have searched
the Forum somewhat but after a while of searching I have
not found any info about my troubles with my ole truck.
I have A 78' F-150 4x2 400ciV8 & C-6 Tranny with 69,000
miles on it, Well yesterday I noticed
the tranny started takin a mind of it's own,
it will not down shift automatically
when you come to a stop, and also from Park
it will not start off in 1st gear, feels like 2nd maybe
even drive. anybody got any ideas?
Hey Justin. New to the forum to. Sounds like what my 77 f250 4x4 460/c6 did to me.
Found out that the kick-down arm came off the carb. Did the same thing would not downshift and started out in drive. Hope this helps .
The kickdown must be in place (did not look yet) because I can floor it and it'll kickdown into second?
another symptom I forgot to mention was it will not down shift at lower speeds in a pull. (for example: slowing down from highway speeds and turning onto a secondary road, the truck is in a strain it will not down shift automatically)
It will downshift into second at lower speeds by vacuum even if the kickdown rod has come off. It sounds more like a sticking valve in the valvebody though.
make sure the shifter linkage is working properly, i know my C6 acts exactly like that when i accidentaly put it in 2nd instead of drive, it will start out in 2nd, go to third, then not downshift from 3rd.....make sure your not actually in 2nd gear when you have it in drive.....my 3 cents......
I wonder if a Fluid change would help? Only thing is.......I have been a bad boy, I have never changed the tranny fluid in this truck , I have owend it since 91'. But in my defense I have only put a few thousand miles on it , in that many years.
I am concerned about having the fluid changed though, I have always heard if you go for a long time without changing the fluid and then do, you run a chance on blowing a seal somewhere???? what is ya'lls(sp) take on this theory???
I would change it. I know people who have done the same thing and after changing they didnt blow a seal. I have owned a couple of Ford Pick-Up's with C-6 Transmissions that did the same thing. Sometimes they would not downshift when slowing down unless you stepped into the throttle. Usually a fluid change helped. It sure cant hurt.
Old fluid can degrade and have different viscosity and properties. Since it's hydraulic forces that do most of the shifting work in your tranny, the correct fluid properties are important. Change the filter and fluid. Also, inspect the fluid that comes out of the tranny. Check for metal shavings and debris.
