Well, at least Ford's specs. They get higher than that when you throw the ICP/R system into open loop and set the regulator to 100% DC
The ICP system is the cause of many, many, many surging problems. It still amazes me that another member here (me1mkee) has these exact symptoms, while both Ford and his dealer refuse to replace a 60 dollar sensor. Maybe with the recall out he will get his truck fixed.
Wow, I can't believe that! I have been told not only to replace the sensor for intermittent surging problems but the connector as well. If I have a customer complaining of a surge (usually a wild surge) and there is an ICP code and normal diagnostics do not come up with anything, the ICP sensor gets replaced. And since I have been burned a few times, the harness connector gets replaced as well. This comes on the advice of the tech hotline. Fixes them every time.
Here's the funny part. The new recall has us replacing the ICP connector on the 2004's with the ICP sensor located on the right valve cover. ALL of the one's that I have had a problem with were the earlier engines with the ICP sensor behind the turbo. Go figure.
hey im curious what does the icp do and what does it stand for? how do you know you have a bad sensor?, is there a way of knowing with out scanning it or its one of those that you must scan to find?
ICP stands for Injection Control Pressure. You first need to understand that the injectors in the 6.0L use high pressure oil to operate. The amount of fuel delivered to the cylinders is directly proportionate to the pressure in the high pressure oil system. The higher the oil pressure is, the more fuel that is injected into the engine. The PCM controls this pressure by controlling a regulator (IPR) and uses the ICP sensor to provide a feedback signal to the PCM indicating the injection pressure.
The injection process is actually is a little more complex then that but I wanted to keep my reply related to ICP. The ICP sensor also provides information to the Fuel Injection Control Module to calculate injection timing and it also allows the PCM to monitor the condition of the high pressure oil system.
my truck when I installed my Quadzilla I mis-plugged the ICP and thought it was plugged in when it wasn;t. Quadzilla box didn;t work and threw a check engine code, so I toke to a buds shop and hooked it up to the OTC Genisys and it showed ICP sensor which on my 04 is located behind the turbocharger. The truck ran and drove fine and it wasn't even plugged in. I am guessing the computer compensates to set values in the ECM coding when a failure like this occurs..............
HMMMMMMMMMMMMM SEEMS ODD I WORK AT A FORD DEALERSHIP AS A DIESEL TECH THE 7.3 WILL RUN WIH THE ICP UNPLUGGED BUT I TRIED A FEW 6.0L THE OTHER DAY AND ALL 5 OF THEM WOULD NOT RUN UNPLUGGED THEY STALL IMMEDIATLEY ARE YOU SURE IT WAS NOT THE EBP UNPLUGGED THEY HAVE THE EXACT SAME CONNECTOR ?

Unplugging the sensor throws the mass fuel quantities off in the crank fuel calculations; they won't start in open loop. Some of them, depending on calibration, will continue to run if you unplug it at idle; some of them won't. If it does continue to run, the truck will have the nastiest feeling throttle in the history of earth
I would like to know that too. Since the cab is still off my 03 & would be a breeze to change out now.Should I change it just because or is it one of those if it aint broke don't fix it.

If you have the extra money for a new sensor I would absolutly do it. just got done doing my 03 ipr and icp sensor and man would that have been nice to do with the cab off!!! If you don't have the updated pigtail for the icp I would throw that in while your at it.
HEY sure thang as hard as the icp is to get to I would I've got icp code and oil leak that i'm dealing with and don't have the time are money to fix it I love my truck but dange the thang is going to $300 DOLLAR me to the poor house help!!!
icp, ipr, turbo oil tube, valve cover. They are all possible, but if your sure your icp is bad shell out the money and change it, my truck was the same thing, that little baby fixed the bad running and the oil. Don't worry its expensive fixing all these little things, once your done though its worth it!
