Ok guys, I have seen on the posts from folks with Tranny Problems that new coolers were recommended with the rebuild. Question? Doesn't a 2000 Ex. come with an external cooler? If it does not, I need one. If it does, how big is it?
Bought the truck used, so I do not have the paperwork on original options like tow package, but was assured by dealer that the Ex. all came with tow package.
If I had done this to my 95 suburban, it would have save me many $$$$$$$ for a burnt tranny. Repair shop said the cooler though external was very small for practically any towing.
Yes you have 2 coolers. An air to water cooler built into your radiator and a separate air to air cooler that sits in front of your radiator.
Unless you intend to pull a 20,000 lbs trailer up Mt. Everest, you are unlikely to need additional cooling.
Tranny shops recommend new coolers with a rebuild because when the tranny self-destructs, it throws out all sorts of shrapnel into the tranny lines, most of which flows to the cooler and gets stuck and is hard to flush out.
Knock on wood, I haven't had any trans problems. I did get a B&M deep trans pan and cooler. It gives you about 3 extra quarts. When I looked at the factory cooler it was bigger than the B&M one I bought, so I left the factory one alone. Also I drain the fluid out of the trans every other oil change (15K mi.). I put the pan on last summer at about 55K and it has 66K now with no issues.
My 2000 X has a transmission cooler and engine oil cooler, if you want to know for sure get a flashlight out and look in front of the radiator or in between the AC condenser for a small coil that is usually the passenger side, hoses and or lines will go back to the transmission, the engine oil cooler will most probably be on the drivers sides (smaller in size to the trans cooler) and hoses and lines will go back to the oil filter mount.
I put the largest Napa over the counter cooler on the 99 F250 along with the tripple pillar set up and will do the same to the X when I've got some extra time. An in line filter is also a very safe bet with the diesel trannies.
