Base ignition timing 460ci

I thought this would be easier but have run into a wall. The sticker under the hood says the base timing should be 10 degrees BTDC. The sticker also says to disconnect the SPOUT connector before checking timing. Thats my problem, where is the SPOUT connector. I know it is "spark out" and is connected to the distributor control module. Non of my books are any help. There is a 2 wire connector (in-line) by the control module wiring that has a removeable piece that I find (with my meter) just shorts or opens that wire. Could this be it? I am hessitant to open the wire and then find out I blew something in the computer. This is related to a overheating problem that I am trying to track down. I wanted to make sure timing was correct. With everything connected the time looks to be about 25-26 degrees.
Any help would be appreciated.
I will post my cooling problem in the cooling section.

Thanks, roughcreek

That's it. All you are doing is taking timing control away from the computer so you can set it mechanically. If you didn't disconnect the spout jumper, then you would move the timing, and the computer would instantly move it back where it was, till it hit it's limit. That's all you are doing, is setting the mechanical timing in the ballpark, so the computer has enough adjustment room to control it from one end the the scale to the other.

Thank you Franklin2, I will check it now, but your explanation of the operation of timing sounds like it would have to be pretty far off to be causing my problem.

Thanks again, appreciate it.

Overheating only moving down the road, or overheating only around town and sitting idling?

What are the symptoms of overheating? Puking water out the overflow? The temp guage going up too high? The engine starts pinging?
