My boss is looking at an 03 F250 4x4 Super Duty, Super Cab, Long Bed, with a 6.0, Torque Shift w/ tow haul. He asked me if it would be a good buy at $25000. It has 52000 miles on it.
Have all of the bugs been worked out of the 03's? From what I have been reading on this forum, I get that gist. Any heads up's and recommendations for him would be appreciated and I will pass it on to him. He currently has a 3/4 ton GMC that is having over heating problems climbing steep grades with his 34' 5er. I would hate to steer him into another bucket of bolts and problems.
My 05 has been great so far but I can't really use that as an example, can I?
Well the easiest thing to do is have the vin run on it. It will tell you everything that was done to it at the dealership service department. It should be able to tell you if it was one the repeat offender trucks.
A lot of what you should do is no different than what you would do while looking at any used vehicle. Crawl under it and take a look-see for anything leaking. Check for tire wear. Look for any overpray that would indicate it's been wrecked and repainted. Check for rust in weird areas to ensure it wasn't a flood vehicle. As others have suggested, run an oasis report at the dealer. it should tell you everything that Ford has done to it and let you know if there are any outstanding recalls.
I'd also run a carfax report on it to make sure it wasn't living in Florida last fall and suddenly purchased by Allstate.
Okay, thanks guys, I'll pass that on to him. If it were an old "simple design" truck, I would have no problem with checkin it out myself. These high tech rigs just mess me up.
For the oasis report, you contact the dealer? Or is there a web site to access that.
Thanks again for the responses.
Look in the glove box and see if there are any records in there. A lot of times the previous owner has stashed all of his service records and receipts in there. Frequently the previous owner's name is in there on a prior registration form or receipt and you could possibly contact him. I have done this on previous used cars and come up with a lot of useful info. If sold by private party, ask lots of questions, if sold by a dealer, then dig the info up and don't believe what the dealer says.
