Installed a mbrp cat-back system on my 04 powerstroke and man is it quiet. I hear it when i first start the truck for about 5 seconds then the only thing you can hear is a slight whistle if your next to the tip. Anyone else have the same results and will a downpipe make it any louder? Thanks
I was going to buy the MBRP from Motorhaven, but my nephew works for a local parts outfit so he got my money this time. His distributor carries the Bully Dog systems. Tonight I installed the back half of a complete 4" turbo back system. As I read the directions and spread the parts out in the shop floor, I noticed that what's in the directions isn't quite what correlates with the amount of tubing. The kit, really is a turbo back, cat delete system with muffler. But, the options are clear as a bell. Leave the cat in, and there's still choice to install the BD muffler or straight pipe it.
So basically, I've installed it cat back, Without the muffler. It sounds nice, and the 6.0 spools up much quicker. And that's without the larger down tube yet. MBRP does have a muffler delete tube option. Take a gander at their website.
I've only driven the truck this evening for a few miles to make sure i don't have any rattles for my work comute tomorow. But it sounds great. It's got a mellow rumble at idle. Into the throttle got thumbs up from my boys when I left the driveway on my test run.
I'll reply back tomorrow after I've put some miles on at different speeds to let you know if there's a drone at cruise on the freeway without a muffler.
Looks like we were working on the same project Steve. I installed my 4"MBRP Turbo Back on my '05 F250 last night. I was a mess, so I didn't drive it until this morning on my way to work. I notice practically no change with the complete kit installed - muffler and cat in place. Last night when I started the truck, one of my daughters looked at me and said "daddy I thought it was supposed to sound different". That should tell you something right there. I did notice lower EGT's and the jury is still out on the turbo spooling up quicker. I'll play some on the way home today and report back.
Since I can't leave well enough alone, this weekend I'll probably play with different configurations (without muffler/without cat etc.) to see how sound and performance change.
Lessons learned; My band at the turbo and down pipe had to be persuaded off with a screwdriver and hammer, because it was stuck on pretty good after loosening it. Had I bothered reading the instructions, I would have saved a bewildered couple of minutes....ya see I didn't know I needed to cut the pipe before the muffler to 29" for my CC, short bed......I'm sure those of you who have done this are now laughing at how it must have looked when I bolted it up. "Here honey hold my beer while I bolt this on". Also the frame will cut the crap out of you if you're not careful.
All in all it was a pain in the butt but easy install. It's helpful to have a second person, especially when installing the new down pipe. I put everything in place before bolting it all down and a 2x4 under the cat came in handy, to keep from putting any undue stress anywhere. AND for those who've never played with exhaust before, those rubber hanger pieces DO come off......they just don't like to come off.
I tell ya what, A four inch tube is a four inch tube, mandrel bends and what not. Although my system is aluminized instead of stainless, (there will be a different sound with the different metals), So far I like the sound without the muffler. There is deffinately a different low rumble at idle, and a distingt note when at cruise speeds. There are different tones as one accellerates under load, but even through the accelleration, there are 'quiet' times, then points where things get 'throaty' and as boost pressure decreases by the driver forcing himself to release throttle pressure... Just about the time he's looking in the mirror and muttering "See ya!" -Oh, did I say that even cat back, no muffler, my 6.0 spools up much quicker than with stock exhaust, and will peg the 30 pound boost gauge without hesitation. Now, once I install the down tube, I'm not sure if it's going to get louder or not.
I plan on running cat back for the next month or so. Then when I've got some free time and I know that the engine/turbo are happy with the new jewelry, I'll install the forward section of the system.
Oh, and to pull the rubber hangers out of the old exhaust, spray some WD40 in and with a lot less swearing those things pop apart much easier.
I did not want to cut my exhaust to get it out, but since our trucks are fully assembled, I guess it's a whole lot easier to get the old system out by cutting. My system has clamp slip flanges, so I think later once I've settled on a configuration, I'll still stop by an exhaust shop and have all joints welded.

i took the system off without cutting. had to drop the trans. crossmember and the skid plate, plus, had to jack the truck up high as i could get it to get downpipe off. muffler wasnt too hard to get out, just had to wiggle tailpipe over the rear axle. It would prolly be easier to get system off by cutting, but its possible to get off without cutting if u dont want the system cut up.
I chopped the heck out of mine but the way I figure I’m not going back to stock. Guess I'll call the muffler shop to get a 4" i.d./30" long piece of pipe and loose the muffler. It just doesn't make hardly any difference right now, as compared to the way it was stock.

They get the aftermarket exhaust. It doesn't make ANY difference to the dealer on trade-in trust me. My Wrangler I traded in for my F250 had more aftermarket parts including exhaust and snorkel (that I had to drill a massive hole in the side of the Jeep to install). I actually got more than $3K over KBB for it.
Oh but I would at least put the MBRP muffler on it though before I traded it in, just for the heck of it.
I also installed the MBRP 3.5"DP and 4" Catback on my 05 F250 and noticed it was very quiet. The only time I noticed a sound increase was when the windows were open. With the windows closed, it might have been a hint louder than stock.
I then installed the Cat delete pipe and that made a difference in sound! Not so much while cruising, but definitely louder under hard throttle! Now the exhaust has a nice whistle at idle and much more throaty sound under acceleration.
Just had my cat back portion of my mbrp turbo back exhaust installed. It is fairly quiet. Had to run with the windows down and get on it some to hear a difference. Only drove a couple of miles, so I can't comment yet on performance changes. Will keep you guys posted.
I also have just installed the Catback MBRP on my 05 CC LB. Have not installed the DP waiting on any waranty issues. Very quiet, not much more whistle. I will not remove the kitty though, too many issues....
