Nice to finally be a member of the powerstroke crowd! Got a question, I have a 2001 F250 superduty 7.3 liter 4 wheel drive, tire size 265/75 R16's. I have run two tanks of fuel through and have gotten 15 mpg. Is this normal??
The truck runs approximately 2,200 rpm at 75 mi/hr.
I have met people that say that they get 17 mpg. no mods.
The truck has a 4" exhaust. No other mods that I can tell.
Welcome to It will depend a lot on how you drive. I get 13.5 around town will running the guts out of it(100hp setting). On the highway running 80 to 85 I've got 15.5. If I go easy the mileage definatly goes up. I will not say to mod your truck to get better mileage. Some do some don't. Your not way off the mark.
Sounds about right. I get that mileage doing short trips, jumps up when doing long trips. Going light on the throttle will improve your mileage. Some of my mods caused some improvements on MPG, but then again those same mods causes the mileage to go down (when mashing down the throttle) and causing the tires to go bald. Plus if you keep the RPMs below 2000, the MPG will be better.
i just got back from a trip two weeks ago and i got 22.3 mpg doing about 70 mph(2000 rpm) the whole way. i usually see about 17 mpg only when i am city driving.
After about 6 tanks, my F350's average is 14.3 mpg.
I only use it for short unloaded local driving, and for monthly loaded trips towing a Polaris 750 quad the 480 milles, from Long Island to Norwich, NY, and back again.
At $2.70 a gallon, it works out to about $.20 per mile for fuel. Which don't seem like much, except when compared to my wifes Sentra which only costs around $.07 per mile.
And if Diesel costs remain the same, it will cost me about $26,000 just for the fuel to put the NEXT 135000 miles on my truck.
I usually get 16.1-16.3 in town driving it easy. Every once in a while i get on it to blow some smoke on the loser behind me with the lowered honda and a 10 inch diameter exhaust pipe. On the highway, I try to always drive at or below 2K RPM which is usually about 70 MPH. I am not sure, but I feel like I am saving the life of my turbo by not running it at a loud whistle around 2300 RPM. Am I correct, is this helping save the turbo life...........I know it saves fuel, which is very important because of the prices.
