Left work. Sat in the usual traffic. Big Red was justa' idling along itching for the light to change so he could run off from another little bitty 4-banger. But as we sat, he just quit. All the gauges were OK so I went to "Park", turned it over only once (as usual) and he fired right off. About 2 or 3 miles down the interstate at around 65 or 70, I notice a little roughness in the engine, a little stuttering or sputtering. I thought I was running out of gas (the gauge doesn't work) so I pulled off at the first exit. On the ramp, it felt like the engine died because I lost power but I heard the starter teeth grinding on the flex plate when I tried to restart. Plus the P/S kept working. Anyway as I slowed to around 40ish, KA-BLAM, I thought we had been shot at and hit. I pulled over in a parking lot, still not out of gas, admired the real throaty sound the old 360 had acquired and saw the muffler laid wide open, split from head to toe. Looks like I get to lay out of work tomorrow and do some tuning up. Nice time to get it dualled out don't you think?
If the internals went and clogged the outlet on the exhaust the motor would die because it can't breath, and makes sence that the pressure blew the seam out in the muffler. Remember the "bannana in the tail pipe" in Beverly Hills Cop...
I think an engine problem blew out the muffler instead of the other way around. I'm thinking the rough running was due to whatever, ignition, fuel, air, problems and that at some point while I was getting off the I, the engine shut off for a few seconds. While I was coasting and the engine still turning over, it pumped enough unburned mixture into the exhaust that when she lit back off the stuff in the exhaust pipe ignited and blew up the muffler.
Yeah, your points are probably due to at least be cleaned, if not replaced. It sounds like it was majorly rich, at least that's what has caused every blown muffler I have had.
I used to do this on purpose back in highschool. When you're cruisin down the road, just turn off the ignition, wait a few seconds and turn it back on. BOOM!!!
I had a dodge that scared the hell outta me a couple times, it would be like -40, it would be fast idling, I shut it off to fill a barrel with water for the horses, was walking away and BOOM! I could see the muffler hanging open below the bottom edge of the box. Did that twice and never after that. I just hammered it closed and it stayed that way till the muffler rusted off. She was just really rich because of the choke though.
I had this happen to me on a 68 240 six I just had bought a few years ago. It was turning over but as soon as I let go of the key, it would die (hidden kill swich I didn't know about). Long story short, I filled the exhaust with unburned fuel vapors and the muffler didn't just burst open, it exploded. My ears are still ringing...
I'd look at the ignition and fuel/air mixture before any pipe work is done...
Yeah, we used to do it in the school busses when they let students drive them.
BTW, only problem I could find was a boogered-up fuel filter. Don't see how this could have caused what happened though. Plugs look fine, air filter's fine, Pertronics seems to be working OK. I drove to work today and it ran great. Still sounds good, too. Got a price of "around" $350 for the dual out. I plan to drop it off today.
Plugged up fuel filter will do it. Was it plugged with what looked like mud. If so then it was rust from your tank. And if it's that bad it'll do it again. Mine did it twice. Within a week of one another. Filled the filter canister up halfway. The fine rust particles plugged the lines and I had to blow air through them. Fixed it by finding an almost perfectly clean tank at the bone yard.
