Will my 7.3 pull a sled?

My brother in law just entered his 01 Cumins in a local pull. He placed second in the Diesel class. His other brother in law placed second in the street class with a V10 Ford auto (smoked a V10 Dodge-hehe). The problem is, the only diesels in the pull were Dodges. There is another county fair coming up and he is wanting me to pull mine to get some Powerstrokes in the mix. I am afraid of dumping the tranny. I have an 03 7.3 auto CC with a SCMT on perf tow, diablo accumulator valve, and 305-70 all terrains. How do I pull? Leave it in Drive low range? Will it do any good? Need some advice from someone who has pulled. I know it cant pull with some of the Dodges as they, umm, are slightly modified. I just want to make a good showing for Ford. But, I hate to make Ford look bad if I cant pull it. Thanks.

This is amature class, I know.....but anybody who does it very long....ends up breaking something. I don't think I'd put my pride and joy through that kind of abuse. Just my oppinion.

It'll pull it in a stock class, but I gotta agree with grey. That type of competition is hard on a truck. I'd be worried about the tranny not holding up, but if you still want to do it here's my advise (I'm no expert, but I do questionable things on occasion as well). Make sure the truck is warmed up to full operating temperature (tranny included). Run in 4-lo in Drive. Watch your EGT's and don't let em get out of hand. If you don't have gauges, I wouldn't pull. Make sure all your fluid levels are right, filters are clean, and your trucks clean. Clean trucks run better, lol... Turn off the A/C, have a fire extinguisher on hand, and always prepare for the worst. Good luck!

I pull mine a couple times a year and do good with it. Just last week I got 2nd and another Ford got first. We beat eight Dodges and some more Fords. The truck that won twisted the center section of the rearend loose from the tubes. He had his truck in drive and it down shifted at the same time the weight box hit. I have a SCMT and use the high setting. Pull in 2nd gear low transfer. It will take off in 2nd and stay in second and will have plenty of power and ground speed. Start off easy and just gradually open it up in about 20 ft. My engine always dies when I let off at the end of the pull but starts right back up. It also helps to air down your tires, 30lbs. front and 40-45lbs. rear. Have FUN!!!

Ill get a hold of some friends off mine an ask them your question? These guys are experts. They know pulling like the back off there hand. If they dont know nobody else does. One friend has placed second or first with his 2001 7.3 the last 3 years in a bunch of pullls. These guys could write a book. Wii get back to you.

Thanks all. I didnt know if there was enough grunt to get it pulling in second from a stop. I'd rather keep the strain as little as possible. I figured get it moving and let it shift to second and then lock it in second.

It will have NO problem starting in 2nd and there is less of a chance breaking if you don't shift. Most of the trucks I see break do it because they shift. I have been pulling trucks for 12 years, with about 30-50 hooks a year so I can speak from experience. I only pull my Powerstroke when we are at our local pulls. Pull from the Reese hitch, the bumper won,t hold up.

here is a video of some sled pulling it is long but worth watching. not too many psd's but you'll get the idea. also at about 10 minutes into it watch the underside of the guys truck start to glow. guess what that is????????? his downpipe/turbo. if your gonna pull you gotta be willing to look past your egt gauge or dont even bother. TRUCK PULLING you wont make it very far if you let off at 1250!!!!!

Kinda cool seeing the '80s ford 460 and the 7.3L Superduty (only fords) pretty much stomp the other rigs.

it helps if you put blocks in the rear end, between the springs and the axle. It's a good trick if you can get away with it.

I have to agree with this statement. except, if you start to see a bunch of guys spin out in the same spot, straddle it, cover the pyro with duct tape, load the tank with centane boost, never hurt anthing. give er the boot and go to town.

August 1st, first local pull around here I am pulling both trucks, buddy is pulling his PSD, and his dads 460. should be a PSD domination. be back after that with results good or bad.
