On my 76 would you recommend putting a electric fuel pump on it or keep it a manual. I am having problems with the gas seeping out and taking a while for it to pump back up to the carb.
no its not a leak, the fuel just flows back into the gas tank after it sits a while and makes it really hard to start, I was thinking on putting an electric fuel pump on and see if it starts easier. I was told by an old mechanic that fords were bad with the fuel draining back down to the tank.
How old is the pump? The pump has two built in check valves in order for it to work at all. The one in the inlet side closes off the tank when the pump forces the gas to the carb. That valve may be leaking slightly allowing fuel to drain back when the engine is not running.
A new pump costs 20- 25 dollars. It will solve your problem, and give you years of service. Only the 60's era pumps are rebuildable -- the later ones were made to be thrown away when done. In the earlier pumps, you could take apart the housing and see the valves, replace them etc. No more.
No way would I go to the trouble of putting an electric pump in, unless you are needing high pressure for FI, or perhaps running some sort of 400 hp monster. With an electric pump going into a conventional carb, you'll need pressure regulators and possible a return line. And it won't be any better than correctly functioning stock.
