I've just picked up a '76 F-150 with a 360. A little troubleshooting indicated that the fuel pump was not up to snuff so I went and picked on up. I realized when I picked it up that the design was a little different (very minor) and I would have to use a universal socket to put it on but that was cool - things change in 25 years. What I did not realize until a few hours later was that the bolt holes are about 3/32 closer together than the one that came off. There is no way this one is going to fit.
I checked right away and found that the "Master 361" is the recommended fuel pump for this engine. Anybody have any experience here? Is there another pump that will work or do I have to modify the one from Master.
Go back to the parts store and trade your pump for another. That one ain't right. By the way, I've replied to another post just like this one...

Good, glad to hear you got it running. I bought a new Carter pump with the filter on it years ago, and a day after I put it on, it quit working, and the gasoline odor was overwhelming. It turn out that the steel nipple for the fuel inlet had pulled out of the pump. Weird... Took it back to the parts store and they gladly took it back and gave me another new Carter pump. It's been running great ever since.

That is wierd. Could have easily been an "auto flambe". Had simular happen to me. When I got the new pump on it was so good that the float would not stop it and it started spewing gas up through the float bowl vents. Luckly no damage done. Glad you got yours fixed!
