I am looking at converting over to an eletric fuel pump reason being I don't get enough fuel out of the mechanical when I need it off-roading. The ? is do I need to run a return line back to the tank or not.
I am running a 74 f100 with a 390 and holley 600 looking to upgrade to the new truck avenger soon.
You do not need a return line for this application. On electronic fuel injection set ups this is neccessary. I have a 67 F100 in addition to my 79. The 67 has a 390 like yours with a set of 427 medium riser heads and intake. I have a 700CFM Holley with a mallory electric pump. My truck is not for off road use either, but i can't see where that should make any difference. FOMOGO
you might want to think about mounting the pump close to the tank as possible and if you have 2 tanks mount the pump as close to the output side of the tank switch as possible the reason is electric pumps like all pumps will push fluid alot better than it will pull it hope this helps
-oil pressure cut off switch, or crash switch. This is to shut off pump automaticaly if something bad happens like the oil pump seizes, -the motor dies, you get into an acciedent....
-power relay. This will keep the load off your old trucks wiring system, will be one less gremlin cause
-large high flow filter. Your truck is over 26 years old, there is no telling what kind of crap is in the tank that will foul up your new fuel pump. Place this directly in front of the pump by the way
-new fuel lines. At the very least replace the rubber ones. Use tranny cooler lines, I am told they have better resistance to MTBE(A neoprene inner lining maybe??), and other crap that is in gas that ruins fuel lines. This is cheap insurance. MAKE SURE THEY DONT RUB anything, they need to be properly insulated against cuts and abrasions. blah blah blah
This is the start of a good and safe electric fuel pump setup. When all is said and done, you will have probably spent about $90 not including the pump($50 ish) to do the upgrade, and maybe about 3-4 hours total time to do all of the work. Have fun
