turn signal

97 f250 LD 4wd....4.6....114k....my right rear turn signal went out the other day...figured it was the bulb, no big deal....new bulb did not fix the problem....after a little research it seems that the multi function switch may be the culprit?? any ideas regarding this would be helpful.....had this issue on trailer lights but those are easy....if it is the multi function switch, where is that?? and how easy is that to replace/or clean up and reinstall??....thanks!

also my back up lights pop on and off when i'm in reverse....this has been going on for some time too....

There was corrosion in the socket on mine, when I changed it, that prevented a connection for the new bulb. Might be the switch, just thought this was something easy to check. I would think the front wouldn't work also if it was the switch, not sure (at all) though. Does it still light up as a brake light or tail light?

The multi-function switch has more contacts than a California eye doctor. There are separate contacts for each bulb (front left/right, rear left/right) as well as it controlling wipers, headlights, etc. It's located in the steering column.

If you can access it, pop off the connector and use an ohmmeter to check between terminals 1 and 6 (1 is pwr in, 6 is out to r/r light).

But I would go with the socket corrosion check first, then check for power at the socket. If no help, check the MFS.

Good luck!

i have power to my tailights, but no rt brake or rt rear turn signal....also the four way flasher does not work for the rt rear...does the flasher go thru the multi switch?? if it doesnt i'm guessing the continuity must be lost somewhere??

yep...everything goes thru the MFS. The signal for the brake, turns and flashers all run thru it (running lights are a different circuit).

MF switch?

If you are going to replace the MF (turn signal) switch. Assuming that it is similar to the 350/450. Tools that will make it easier: Philips screwdriver-to remove the column shrouds, torx bits-to remove MF mounting screws, small screwdriver(like the tool-trucks give away) & straight o-ring pick-to unlock tabs on wire harness. You do not have to remove the steering wheel.
Steps:1-disconnect ground cable. 2-remove key tumbler. 3-remove column shrouds. 4-unscrew switch. 5-remove electrical connectors. Reverse to install. And be patient when disconnecting the electrical connectors they break easilly(been there done it, many times) Hope this is helpful.
