I am considering building a 434 stroker. What heads would be best to use. I would prefer to use the stock 400, 351c 2v, or aussie heads. I use the truck for competition pulling so I am trying to achieve max torque, but I still would like to run it on pump gas.
You definitely want quench heads. That means Aussie heads. You can use the dish in the piston to get your compression ratio down.
The best heads to use are the heads with the best flow at low lifts. These would be CHI or AFD or Edelbrock(?) aluminum heads. If you can't afford those, then ported and flowed Aussie Iron heads should be your choice, but alloys will allow a higher CR, than iron heads.
He may be able to run fairly high on the compression. He will probably be using a large cam in competition. The dynamic compression ratio may be low enough to use pump gas. Aluminum heads would be ideal for this application.
We are currently building one with the CHI heads. Compression ratio was one of our concerns. This engine will be a hyd roller. So I called Dave Strolien, who help in develping the head. He is also from Minn., He suggested 11:1 compression with pump gas. In fact he said he built and engine with 12:1 compression and pump gas. We have choose a mid 10:1. With the hyd roller, smaller duration, we should be making plenty of Dynamic compression.
I think that Dave Strolien probably used a lot more cam than you plan to use. I am running CHI heads with 10.3:1 CR, but my IVC is 66.5 degrees ABDC. My DCR is 8.1:1. I use 93 Octane fuel and have absolutly no problems. I may be able to use lower Octane fuel, but have never tried.
