Pinging sounds?

Pinging sounds?
Whenever I turn the car off and the engine is cooling down, my truck(2002 f150) will make pinging or clicking sounds which i assume is the metal cooling. ive heard that in all my cars so im not concerned about that. But what does concern me a little is that i hear those exact same sounds after i turn the truck on and drive around for a few minutes. and even if ive been driving it around for half an hour, i will hear it on occasion. is that something i should be concerned with? ive never heard it in any of my other cars after ive turned it on and have been driving around so its kind of a suprise. thanks!

That's normal. All vehicles do that to a point. It's nothing more than expansion and contraction of exhaust system components creating a very tiny metal to metal rub which sounds like a creak or click or tick. Expansion occurs right after startup and is caused by rising component temperatures. Contraction occurs after shutdown and is caused by falling component temperatures. Sometimes you'll hear this when drastically changing engine load, which also creates the same rising and falling temperatures.
