What is causing a growling noise from my a/c? I started noticing noise and have turned off the a/c to keep from hearing this. I think the compressor is ok but the clutch area should be replaced. Does that sound kinda close? Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.
if its not making any noise with the ac off that means the hub and pulley are ok. it wont hurt it if you run the vehicle with the ac off. sounds like the internal parts in the comp. are getting a little slack ,kind off like a high mile engine, it still works just a little noise.good luck.
Yep and metal shavings are being put into the system. I just had mine replaced under my extended warranty @ 52,000 miles. It was only noticable at an idle and it wasn't real loud. But being knowledgable I got it to make the noise and when the a/c guy at the dealer checked it, low and behold, it had metal in the system. They replaced the compressor, accumulator/dryer and the orfice tube. Flushed the whole system too to remove any left over debris. It's nice and 38 degrees
It won't hurt anything to leave it off. It will just keep it from wanting to lock up completely.
