Air pump growling

My truck makes this gurgling/growling sound that goes with the rpms. Its noticeable when rev it. Had my muffler guy listen to it the other day when he welded on some new exhaust tips for me, and he said its the smog pump and its normal. 1: why is it louder now than in the past? 2: can i delete the a.i.r system without issues? The noise sounds so unhealthy

There is little to no gain in removing it. Also, if you have factory cats you need it. If you think its too noisy, just replace it.

Agree with Texas, if you have the original cats, they need air pumped into them to "fire off " the catalytic process. If you delete the air pump, the cats will more than likely fail.

There is little to gain from disconnecting it, the parasitic drag is not enough to worry about in a street truck.

One thing I have learned about the EEC-IV and all it's components is that they are all needed. Take one out and you take a leg out from the stool...

I've had issues with my smog pump making noise in the past as well. It seems to depend on the season/humidity. During spring and winter, when there's a lot of snow, rain and the like, moisture gets inside the bearing and causes it to squeak. When late summer and fall come around, it dries out and quiets down.

You can strip down the pump and re-pack the bearing, but you'll need a press to remove and re-install the pulley.

Dammit lol. I dont have cats. Then again i dont want to pull the pump apart to make it less noisy, even though i will probably break down and do it anyway.

If you don't have cats then you don't need the pump. You can pull it off and figure out a different belt/tensioner for the alternator.

IIRC the pump injects air between the first and second cats on a stock system. What did you do with that air tube when you removed the cats?

The air tube is just hanging out near the exhaust. The air pump also injects air into the head.

I put some ATF in the inlet of the pump when turned off and let it sit a while. Then I start truck and idle. Once its freed up and working better you can probably dump some fluid in when running. My pumps usually spin freely and nicely afterwards. I leave the pump and get rid of the other crap. Then plumb the pump directly into the head. If its spinning free then its a good idler and you don't need a special size belt. You can get a stock delete pully from a late 90s van and sometimes trucks I think. I got mine from a van (just sitting on shelf just in case)
