v10 vs. 6lit. sillyness
Thanks to Greg250 for trying to run with with me.
Lets try something else...how 'bout round tires vs square tires.
Frank I understand your comment about not allowing it….what I would like to see, instead of that…respect!
That is a subliminal message from a guy (me) that has owned and driven and pulled with both!

LET IT GO!
Friend had Chevy $ on credit card, just got a 2500 diesel with my reccomendation and positive impressions from driving my PSD (he is a happy camper, just poorer). Man that 2500 is quiet compared to PSD.
Other friend is looking at a PSD due to 'family plan', and has a Dodge now (another PSD will be in the company lot, I think).
These diesels seem to be contagious :-)
I don't usually post on one (gas v diesel) but I'm making a exception, with all the threads that I have read that posters have gone from gas to diesel, I always look at what they had before changing 9 times out of 10 they had a gasser with the wrong gears or went with a smaller motor for fuel economy or put big tires on (not just this forum). I don't care what you drive or what you do with it but don't complain that its a dog or can't pull a load if you set it up wrong. I have driven two other V10s with 3.73 gears and they are dogs compared to mine with 4.30s my DRW has 215/85 tires and my SRW has 265/75 and I can tell the difference in pulling power between the two. Its not that I haven't driven diesels because I have (with and without loads) I was not impressed with there performance or pulling power, but thats just me.
This is a real life comparison between the two, I have a HH 35FKTG 5ver and a customer of mine has the same thing (he looked at mine and ordered the same one) mine averages 15K went pulling. He has a 03 PSD and I have my V10 both DRW his is a CC mine is a SC I have a 50 gal aux tank his doesn't. When we compared notes pulling Eisenhower pass I70 Colorado we both were down to 20 to 25 mph at the top. I average long trips 8 to 9, he gets 9 to 11, he is on second tranny and turbo I have had no problems at all ( he went the big bucks and installed a ATS transmission).
Buy whatever turn your crank but set it up for what you are going to do with it. GEARS GEARS GEARS By the way I learned my first lesson in 1978 F150 I6 4 speed overdrive next truck 1979 F250 400M granny 4 spd, I still had the wrong back gears but I changed that later on ( another lesson ).

Towing
Freeway
My V10 can easily tow my TT up and down Interstate 5 where there are little to no hills. I will run at 60MPH and at 3000RPMs. With a headwind (as JetJock can attest) I'd have to use more gas so the RPMs would increase but the speed would stay about 60MPH. The PSD just toots along at 1900RPMs and the noise level is much quieter.
Mountains
Running up and down 5000' mountain passes was a different story. Short inclines and the V10 would power up just fine. Long steep grades would start at 60mph and end up at 35 or 40mph. Super high RPMs, VERY VERY loud cab and a ton of frustration. The PSD takes the same mountains at about 2500RPMs and again is much quieter. The V10 would really start to peter out on a long grade. If I had to lift for some reason, I would never get back to speed. The PSD can easily accelerate up any hill, even after a hard brake.
Winner: PSD. They can both tow but the PSD is better in my area of the country. Living in flat lands, the V10 would be just great. When you live and tow in mountainous areas like I do, you are running at 4K RPMs the entire time and it gets old real fast.
Mileage
Towing
V10 - Freeway 7 to 10 / Mountains about 5
PSD - Freeway 10 to 12 / Mountains about 10
No Tow
V10 - City 10 / Freeway about 12
PSD - City 12 / Freeway about 15
Winner: Tie... The PSD isn't "broken in" yet and I'm getting better mileage the the V10 while towing. Mileage while not towing is about the same. And given the cost of the PSD, mileage over the long haul could be a moot point anyway. I do tow alot and perhaps I could recoupe my money when all said and done, but with fuel prices the way they are, it's not likely.
Resale:
I have found that the resale on the V10 isn't that great. I have a near mint 02 that I can't sell. It's been in the local paper, online and in a weekly magazine for about two months now. I have had three calls all of which thought it was a diesel. I keep lowering the price and still nobody is interested. My price is so low that in another month or so, I will be at the price my dealer offered me. That is $20K. In about three years, my truck has devalued over $12K. I watch the PSDs come and go in the papers and my lonely babe just sits there.
Summary
So, they can both tow, they get similar mileage and they are both fantastic rigs. However, to me, it's all about power, low-end torque and noise level while towing in the mountains. That's it, everywhere else they are too close to call. In the mountains, the PSD just cleans the V10 clock.

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I own a V-10 but most of my buddies have PSD's, which I have towed with on numerous occasions. If I towed in mountains regularly, I probably would have sprung for the PSD. However, most of my towing close to home is relatively flat. I tow one to two times per year into the mountains, and I don't mind revving the V-10 for these occasions. The V-10 will pull 10K in the mountains if you're not afraid to run up the RPM's, it just doesn't tow with the ease of a PSD.
This will probably bring me some heat, but I also think you are right on with the resale. I seldom buy vehicles new and one of the deciding factors swaying me to the V-10 was the price difference, which in my neck of the woods was even greater on used than new. Again, this is in my area, other markets may be completely different.
At the end of the day, I am a V-10 convert now and will buy another in the future. For my usage and geography, it just fits. In addition, it gives me and my buddies something else to rag each other about! Nuff said, good post.
i hate having to lock a thread. just like tim.but some times they get out way of hand and leave me no choice.
thanks again gang
