In regards to bulb type, up till the late sixties 1895 bulbs were the most common. 168/194 bulbs have been the rule until recently with all the micro bulbs they're using now.
There are some red LED wedge base #194 bulbs on eBay that have a conical light diffuser that may work without any other diffuser. They should last forever also.
I read all of these posts and had to pull out my instrument cluster. It was dark and -5 degrees, but I have been totally disgusted with my green dash lights since I bought this truck and I was going to do something about it. I disassembled the instrument panel and popped off the blue covers - piece of cake! I put the instrument cluster back in an it looks great! It is twice as bright and I can actually see all of the gauges. Thanks guys, for getting me fired up to get those green lights out of there!

Yeah I think I am going to do the same thing here very soon.. I cant sttands no more... Do that untill I find some way to make them red or dark orange.......Also I was wondering if there was a way to put in all red lights on my truck? Instead of the yellowish orange in front..? Do they sell Red ones? Also my rear lights are all messed up, they are so old and weatherd that, where you put the boot that holds the light is all cracked and off so my light just hangs in there...:-( Is there a good place to buy these? and how much do they cost? I was maybe thinking of lookin on E-bay?
It sounds like we should stay away from the "Tamaya" brand of LED lights. Otherwise I think the LED lights are the way to go to convert to red unless you can find a mustang cluster.
Remember the heater controls are going to remain green.
I believe it is illegal to show a red light to the front of a vehicle (unless you are a cop). Check your local laws.
You can find replacement tail light assemblies on ebay all the time.
When you replace your bulbs clean up the flex circuit and use a little silicone dielectric grease on the contacts and flex circuit. Remember to clean the bulk plug contacts and flex circuit also. Use silicone dielectric on them also.
You can buy replacement lampholders at any auto parts store.
You can get replacement instrument clusters and the rear plastic part of the cluster regularly on ebay or you can visit your local scrapyard. Scrapyard visits are more fun because you always find something for your truck that you didn't know you needed
On my way home for Christmas I stopped in at a big truck stop. In the store they were selling colored bulbs (1895, 194, 1157 etc) and even colored covers to slip over them. They're part of an accessory line made by a company called Barjan out of Moline. Prices were good too, at only about two bucks for a pair of 194s.
Truck stops are everywhere and the big ones sell all kinds of truck stuff. That is where the market is. There may be literature with catalog info and web links in them also.
I went to a truck stop to get a heavy duty toggle switch for a bus. I couldn't find one anyplace else for DC service, even the big industrial electronics houses (AC stuff only). I could special order some from several companies for $$$. I think the HD toggle ran ~$7...
Most Wal-Marts and other discount stores that have auto sections will have colored 194 bulbs, which will fit in your dash cluster. I think I have seen on several occasions: green, red, blue, amber and even once or twice: purple.
Autometer makes rubber covers for these size bulbs. They have Blue, Yellow, Green and Red. I have the red ones on my Autometer guages and changed the dash cluster lights to the red 194's I got at Walmart. The only thing I don't like is that I can't change the heater control lights, yet. I'll get a pic of the lights tomorrow night if you want.
I changed my 77 ford hiboy dash lights to blue in about 10 min. all you have to do is buy 2 red light bulbs and take out those two light covers in the dash and then put your red bulbs in place of the clear ones. I found my blue bulbs at Advance Auto Parst and the have red ones too.
