Right now I have a 94 150 XLT with a 302. The lifters are making some noise, the oil pump is about to go, and at 135k, math says that I should go with a remanufacture.
So, do I stay with a 302 or change over to a 351?
I occasionally pull and haul.
This is always my driver.
Gas mileage is not as much of an issue; my Goldwing gets 45mpg.
If it was just a daily driver, I would say stay with the 302 for mileage, but since that's not an issue and you said the key words, pull and haul, then I would have to agree with Justin, bump up to the 351. Depending on your budget, you could go with a crate motor, or get a good reman locally. Ask around, see who in your area does good work. Or, you could find a core motor and have it done, or do it yourself. -TD
How do you know your oil pickup screen is clogged? Why not just change the oil pump, also, i have had many people disagree with me on a same issue, are you sure you're using the correct oil filter. AC filters, have a pressure regulated setup, as to where even motorcraft , i have my doubts, i have never had a problem with a fram filter, try cleaning the holes in the push rods as well, those can glog when people use motor honey of STP, once inside an engine, those two products simply turn to grease, the idea in an engine is for oil to not stay in the same place for too long.In my south hot Houston area i only use 2w50w, i never have trouble, but up noth i siggesst 5w30w...Janet
PS Check those lifters, it's a tad work, but tells a story, also if you're running a high lift cam, that will bend those pushrods, you change to higher lobe, you must use a shorter pusrod, remember those are bolt down rockers with no adjust ment. As far as pulling and hauling, this can cause crank thrust and lower endwear
Hi there, if it wasn;t for these crazy emmisions laws in texas, i would love to put a 68 to 71 of those older 302 engines in my 89 town cars, they had more iron in then, as well as easy to work on, oh well just a dream.Seems to me after 84 they used lots more gasoline too..Janet
I would vote for the 351w, the built and non built 351w that I have ran
and drove to work on a daily basis has always got better mileage than any
of the 302s i've had!
The gas mileage difference between a 302 and 351 is so minimal that it should not be used as a factor to decide between them. The 351 is bigger, but has much better low end torque and you don't need to push the gas as hard to achieve the same motion. It makes up for it.
I have to agree with MustangGT221 on this. For a full size truck you will find that you wont be pushing the engine as hard with the larger displacement engine, and you will probably end up getting as good of mileage or better... if you dont horse on it too much. A vote for the 351 for sure from me!
