I bought a long block 351W from recon for $814.00 Last year for my plow truck, and it has been a real good mill.NO problem's at all.they wanted $1,100.00 I do belive the figur was for a 302.That's what I had in the truck before the 351W long block.the 302 I had was out of a 83 stang, and it served for lot's of abuse, and work, and we still use the 302 in a street worior truck we run,but the 351W had just that little bite more the truck needed to plow, but still keep the good gas milage.I love both the 302/351W.id go with the 351W though if i had to do it again.Just my thought's.

go with the 351w cause the extra power and torque will be handy. They have the same mounts and bell housing patterns.

Thanks for the help! Sounds like both engines are pretty reliable. I think I am going with the 351w for the power for my street truck. I understand that the 351w and 302 are completely interchangable, is that right?

Except for the intake manifold and possibly the distributor. The 351W block is about an inch taller and wider than the 302 block. The 302 uses 7/16" diameter head bolts and the 351W uses 1/2" diameter head bolts. If you get a long block, that won't matter because it will have the correct bolts anyway.
Everything else wil interchange.
Jimmy

PS, the 351W and 302 have a different firing order so make sure that you wire up the plug wires correctly,

I'm leaning more towards the "or something"

I've just been around these things for a long time.
I have a 77 302, a 88 5.0 HO, and a 351W in my 63 F100.

Actually arent the oil pans different because of the larger rear main on the 351w?

The 351w is everthing a 302 is only better. IMHO the only thing a 302 is better at is one being smaller, it fits in smaller engine compartments better. Good if you have a Mustang, or Falcon, not an isue in a truck. And two, the 302 will rev higher then a 351w. Agean if you are building a motor for road racing in a Mustang, thats fine. Probably not going to spin a motor in a truck over 6 grand, so not an issue. Go with the 351.

Oh BTW, yes the manafolds are diferent, as are the distrbitures. But also the oil pan is, AND some of the mounts on the front, iealt,PS,AC etc are diferent. Plan to change/adapt them.
