Since I baught this truck a couple of years ago it has had a tap that comes from the right side of the engine only under load. It seems louder when cold and goes away entirely when no throttle is applied. I am thinking it is a blown exhaust gasket but lately I have worried it could be something worse and ignoring it might not be such a good thing.
Any thoughts?
Using a piece of rubber hose, put one end in the area of the noise, the other on your ear. An exhaust leak will be heard clearly. Knocking can be localized using a screw driver or wooden dowel. Same drill, one end in the area of the noise the other aganst your ear,
Hi--think you have it pegged! What happens is not necessarily a blown gasket, tho. Some older 460 Manifolds are prone to warp with the extremes of hot/cold over the years. What can happen is that the manifold studs loosen or break off allowing the leak. The key is the noise occurs under load. My m/h did this and I thought it was a lifter. Hard to diagnose because it requires engine to be under load. I was lucky, my mani studs were just loose. For the fix-remove manifold. (what fun) go to ford get updated studs and replace them all. Then three choices, go with new gasket( least preferred), get copper exhaust gaskets from JEGS website, or have manifold surfaced and install with no gasket. The last two both have advocates. I went with copper and no more leaks, but I did retorque a couple of times when engine dead cold. I have not seen a cracked manifold, but read stories from folks that it happened to. Oh yeah, fourth repair choice, almost forgot, headers if you have room for them.
On my m/h I had to pull the heads and then take the manifolds off--maybe yours will be easier-Hope so Good luck, Alex
This is a rampant problem on 460's. Check for a missing bolt head on your exhaust manifolds especially the right rear bolt. I put Banks headers on my motorhome and that cured it. If you dont stop the leak the back outside corner of the head can actually break off-this has happened to some guys. Other guys said they got updated manifolds and hardware from Ford but it also failed. Thorley headers are also good and less money than Banks.
Wow! Thanks for the warning! Thorleys are less than Banks?!?!?!? I remember losing hope after seeing the price of Thorley's. I will have to save a bit of money for those.
Meanwhile I will check out that bolt situation.
