I'm getting ready to fabricate an alumimun dash for 78 CrewCab. Has anyone done this yet? I've searched and not found any clear threads on this subject. I'm looking for do's and don'ts! Any help is appreciated!
I have also considered doing this to my 74F250. Oh well I have to pull the dash to fix some things under there anyway... Let me know how it goes I would be interested, I put a Dakota digital gauge in my 96 Harley Road King and I am pretty happy with that, although I don't think I would want digital gauges in my truck, it just wouldn't fit the decor... I would prefer classic analog gauges in basic black, I used pool table felt on my headliner, it looks pretty cool.
I used to do sheet metal work for a living, so I'm kind of excited about how it will look. I plan on making a template out of cardboard, then 28 ga metal, and finally .090 brushed aluminum. Autometer has some cool gauges, speedo's and tach's that fit the look of our trucks. I'll keep everyone posted.
I was going to do this in my 77 F-100 Shortbox, too much of a pain, everyone told me not to do it. So instead I am going to take out my guage cluster and paint it all white and put black numbers and red MPH marks, and then switch the lights to red, it will really improve the brightness at night and red keeps the retna in your eyes open so you take in more light, thus , you can see better at night. I think thats why the navy uses that in there subs and aircraft?
AFAIK the human eye is most sensitive to green light and least sensitive to red light so the red light does keep the pupil open wider. The green light would seem to make it do just the opposite... The green light is the most pleasing light to the eye tho which is probably why it was chosen (Marketing).
My penny's worth...
