I took my truck to the dealership for some low RPM pinging with reg unleaded quik-trip gas (good stuff top tier rated). They replaced the mass airflow sensor, did a fuel injection service, and a computer reporgram. It still pings, just not as bad.. any ideas?
When you say low RPM, are you talking around 1000 to 1200 right before it shifts out of overdrive? If so, I had that in my 03' V10 ever since I drove it off the lot. I know these things are suppose to run on 87 octane. For the longest time I drove around with the overdrive off and it worked fine but MPG suffered. So this I started manipulating the tranny with my foot. When I got to a section af incline in the road that I knew pinging was gonna happen, I just let off the gas for a second and back in.....the tranny would downshift without having to go faster to get it into passing gear. Running a higher octane fuel took that pinging away for me. As of right know I have added a superchips microtuner and I am running 93 octane and it never pings, ever.
It usually does it at about 50mph to 65 in top gear for a very small RPM range. When I put higher octane gas in it, never pings. it is really kind of odd.
You might want to look into a "top end" cleaning...where a machine is hooked up to your intake (I think) and cleans all of the carbon out of the combustion chamber and piston tops....carbon is the main cause of the pinging you described.
Try different gas. Mine is fine most of the time on QT gas, but not always. Qt can get its fuel from different sources. Sometimes it has problems.
I have found in my case, the gas makes the difference in pinging or not
