I have a 01 f-550 with a 7.3 that will not stay running. It seam to do it only when it gets warmed up. I was told by one person that their is a common sensor that they replace all the time to fix the problem. He would not tell me what it was only that he would test and replace it for $300. Anyone heve any ideas...
What he is talking about is The CPS (Camshaft Position Sensor).
Yes the 7.3 is famous for them. However I would like a little more detail. Does the truck jerk or buck before it dies?
You can go to powerstrokeshop.com and get an OEM CPS for about half of what the dealership will charge you. If you have a International dealer near you they will also be significantly cheaper. NAPA is slightly cheaper.
Replacing them requires a 10mm wrench and about 15 minutes of your time. Very easy. I can send you a picture of the CPS's location and replacement instructions if you want to go with this.
I have not driven the truck much. Im just going what what the driver is telling me. But when it has died one me its like just turning off the key. It will start right back up run 20 seconds then die again. And sometimes it will run fine all day. I dont think it is shuting off while it is going down the road. just when it is ideling parked and warmed up. It is a bucket truck so it stays running alot of the time.

I just talked to the driver of the truck. He said it has died on him a few times while going down the road and then turned back on all by its self. He also said some times when he starts it up the check engin light will be on and u can push the gas pedle to the floor with no response. If he turns it off and restarts it it runs fine and the lights off. I dont know if that is part of the same problem or not.

Yes, its the cps, and if you have any doubts about doing it yourself get ahold of Jim Manco at Northern Diesel Performance, he can help you out, he is in Eagle River, but works in Anchorage, don't let the dealer get 3 bills from you for that piddly little cps.
