Please Help
Hello everyone, recently i posted about a "potential" timing chain problem on my`99 Ford Explorer with a 4.0 SOHC. A "rattleing" sound coming from what sounds like somewhere under the car near the transmission. Well i left the problem alone assuming the rattle would get worse and just as i suspected, it has. I have no problems starting the car and no unhealthy sounds occur when i start the car. The rattling is present at idle as well as in gear. Every now and then when im driving i hear a high pitched short squeak sound coming from the front drivers side. I really need to diagnose the problem and i was wondering if these "symtoms" sound like the chain or maybe somethin else. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Not sure if it's on the SOHC or the OHV, but i've read that the cam sensors can get noisy. Take a listen in the area where the distriutor used to be.
Might help to use a short piece of garden hose like a stethoscope to try & pinpoint the noise.

The noise could be caused by loose heat shields on your catalytic converter. This is a common problem and easy to fix. You said that you can hear a squeak sometimes coming from the driver's side. It could indicate a faulty idler pulley and/or tensioner. A bad tensioner can cause a rattling noise when it gets worn down enough.
