Morning all, I have a 95 Explorer, 4.0, XLT. Had some problems starting and found bad fuel pump relay, this was fine for a while, then it happened again, this time bad ground on neg. side -replaced terminal end, cleaned ground where it attaches to body -again every thing was fine for a while. Now there is no pump sound when the key is on and as you all know no start. Fuel pump relay changed again, checked the fuses, got power to the fuel pump relay, inertial switch not triggered. Got power to the pump connector at the back by the fuel tank, voltage appears to drop off. Is there another fuse I have forgot, any in the back of the vehicle? The code I get (OB-1) is 542. I want to be sure before I go changing the fuel pump. Also when putting the neg. battery cable back on there is a slight arc sound, when the key goes to on you can hear the relay in the distrobution block but there is more heavy wiring and a connecor or block forward of the dist. box attached to the fender well where I have heard some clicking like a relay.any ideas or a smack on the head would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike
Code 542 means the computer is not seeing sufficient voltage on the fuel pump power wire, at the engine compartment end. This means the fuel pump relay is not pulling in, is not supplied with power, or that the wiring or fuel pump itself is shorted out.
Try disconnecting the fuel pump from the wire at the tank end. See if the code 542 goes away. If the code goes away, the fuel pump may be stuck or short circuited. If the code 542 does not go away, the computer thinks there is a problem with the power
back at the engine compartment end, and pulling the fuel pump may be a waste of your time.
Thanks guys, I tried the relay's to no avail, the inertia switch seems ok, the connnector was clean. I disconnected the wires at the back of the tank and still have the 542 code. Not sure where to go next, is there a way to bypass or check the inerta switch?
