-start the car, no rattle.
-drive away, no rattle.
-get on highway, no rattle.
-apply brake if there's traffic on the highway, no rattle.
-get off highway, (coming to a slower speed e.g 15mph) rattle appears.
-rattle continues as i slow down with no brake applied.
-apply brake for a stop sign, rattle stops as soon as i apply the brake.
i have noticed that the rattling appears after i slow down (between 0-20mph) from doing highway speed. as if i have to go fast enough for it to start rattling. but wont rattle during highway speed. then will rattle as i slow down.
if it's the heat shield then why would it stop when i hit the brake.
for instance, if it's rattling at let's say doing 10mph, and then i hit the brake to slow down to 5mph, it will stop rattling while the brake is applied. then when i let off the brake, the rattle resumes.
enough cavitation in the tires to create a rattle, but not really be felt in the vehicle. It could also be the brake dust shield behind the rotor. I was just giving you ideas. My .02.
i appreciate the ideas. i just had the brakes serviced so i would have assumed that the problem would have been discovered at that time. but i guess it's possible that it might be brake related.
My 94 was doing the same thing, it was a combination of loose heat sheilds and the muffler clamp between the cat and muffler had come loose and the band around the muffler tying it to the body had cracked, so everything from the muffler back was moving and rattling at low speeds, but when the brakes were applied the rattle stopped, it took me 2 months to track down all the loose stuuf under there, but after all its 12 years old, things tend to come loose after a while.
i replaced everything from the muffler back a few months ago. heat shield was tightened too cause it was rattling when i hit the gas.
this rattle is sooo loud that people walking down the street turn around to see what the noise is as i approach them.
the rattle is almost the same sound as if the center cap on the back wheels was falling off. i know this because one of the caps already came off. i check the other cap and it's tight.
Check to see if your jack is tight in the fender well. I am just giving you all the checks I went through with mine. Climb underneath and start grabbing and shaking different pieces, from the front to rear or rear to front, check skid plates, shocks, suspension, etc.
i dont have a jack...next question. just kidding. thanks for staying interested in my bizarre rattle. i dont have a jack in the fender. it was taken out before i got the car.
keep peppering me with ideas if ya dont mind..thanks.
There should be a tube from the emissions on the back of the engine that ties it to your exhaust, check to see if this is still attached to the exhaust. Mine also created a little rattling noise when foot was taken off the gas. You say this is coming from the rear of the vehicle, you think?
hard to tell where it's coming from. i think it's coming from the right side, and probably the rear wheel area.
the more i think of it, the word rattle is an understatement. it sounds more like 2 pieces of metal slapping together, like somthing may be loose in the brake area. and that is why when i even tap the brake it will stop..let go of the brake..continues.
but it only does it after i have gone over a certain speed. i haven't gotten it down to a science yet though.
it was doing it before hand. and that is what makes me a little confused. the clunking was there when the brakes were serviced. but i truly believe it has to do with the brakes.
