edelbrock flooding under acceleration

I am new to non f.i. fuel systems. The edelbrock on mt 86 351w seems to be dumping gas under acceleration (lots of black smoke). It starts and as idles fine. The problem has slowly progressed over 3months and now it will sometimes bog down so baddly that it will almost stall after sitting at a stop or driving up a hill. This carb seems to have no adjustment outside of idle and I've tried every position on the accelerator pump and checked the floats. So, heres my thoughts, if I am mistaken PLEASE put me right:

1) If it were the accelorator pump wouldn't it lean out instead of flood?
2) If the edelbrock has metering rods than switching to a leaner rod isn't the answer because it used to run fine the way it is. ?

Beyond that I'm not sure what to do but try and rebuild the whole thing.

Thanks for any input

How old is the carb? I have had a couple edelbrocks and a carter afb(same as edelbrock). The ones I had seem to need tuning or rebuilding on a regular basis. If yours are older or haven't been rebuilt I would start there. The rebuild kit runs $35. Your carb should have two idle mixture screws on the front but those would affect idle not off idle accel that much if at all.

Edit: If it does this after idling for any mount of time then maybe your fuel pump is overpowering your carb. I would rebuild it unless you are running a high pressure pump without a reglator (sp?) It really sounds like the carb can't keep the fuel where it belongs under acceleration.

Thanks, It is in a 9 ton box truck and I've had it about a year and it sat for about 1 1/2 years before I bought it. I guess I'll be trying my first carb rebuild soon.

edelbrocks seem to leak around the gaskets after they have been sitting for any length of time. I rebuilt my edelbrocks and it was pretty easy.

Sounds like either a fuel pressure problem or fuel boiling in the bowls.

but if it were a fuel delivery problem or gas boiling in the bowl wouldn't it lean out and not flood?

I am only running on my own logic and if I am wrong would appreciate some schooling.

Thanks

Nate

P.S. Its a mechanical fuel pump and I figure that the pump could go bad and not deliver fuel but would not go bad and send to much. I can't imagine that a mechanical pump would have enough pressure to overpower the float needles.

Is it a stock fuel pump or an aftermarket? You should have 6 1/2 pounds of fuel pressure.

When gas boils, it goes out the vents or the boosters and down the carb.
A fuel pressure check is needed to verify pressure. You should have no more than 6 to 6.5psi. The float level could be too high causing to to run over as it heats and expands a little in the bowls.

I rebuilt the carb and found that while the floats looked ok that were adjusted wrong and I had to much gas in the bowls. It now runs much better.
